浜辺（はまべ）にだゝずみしに、程（ほど）なく後（しりへ）の方（かた）より、其形（そのかたち）、かしらは螺髪（らはつ）の如（ごと）くにし
て腰（こし）には毛皮（けがは）をまとひ、手（て）には弓箭（ゆみや）を携（たづさ）へ又は鉄炮（てツぱう）を持（も）ち、其 外（ほか）鎗（やり）長刀（なぎなた）

浜辺に佇んでいると、程なく後ろの方から、その姿は、頭は螺髪のようにして腰には毛皮をまとい、手には弓矢を携え、また鉄砲を持ち、その他槍や薙刀、鉾のようなものを持っている者たちが、その数およそ三百人余り、こちらを指して進んで来る。
一同がこれを見ると、恐れ震えて、生きた心地がしなかったが、あの三百人余りの内から、十四、五人がこちらに近寄り、何か言葉を発するけれども、理解し難いので黙って答えなかったところ、彼らは浜辺に繋いだ舟に入り、衣類や諸道具をことごとく略奪して立ち去った。こうして日もすでに夕暮れ時になったので、集まって来た者どもは、皆散り散りに帰って行った。後は磯を打つ波の音が身に染みて、この世とは全く思われないので、ただ茫然として佇んでいた。
新年の年の初めの初日の光が、曇りのない御代に住みながら、どういうわけでこのような恐ろしい国に流れ着いて、これほどまでに辛い目に遭うのだろうかと、口には言わないけれども、心は同じ二十人、ただしくしくと泣いていた。

As they stood on the beach, before long from behind them came people whose appearance was such that their heads were like spiral shells, they wore animal skins around their waists, carried bows and arrows in their hands or held guns, and others carried spears, naginata, and halberd-like weapons - about three hundred people in total, advancing toward them.
When everyone saw this, they trembled with fear and felt as if they were no longer alive. From among those three hundred or so people, fourteen or fifteen approached them and said something, but since it was difficult to understand, they remained silent and did not answer. Then those people entered the boat tied at the beach and completely plundered all the clothing and various tools before departing. As the day was already approaching evening, all those who had gathered dispersed and went away. Afterwards, only the sound of waves beating against the rocks penetrated their hearts, and it seemed utterly unlike this world, so they simply stood there in bewilderment.
Though they lived in an unclouded reign under the light of the first day of the new year's beginning, why had they drifted to such a terrifying country and come to experience such bitter hardship? Though they did not speak these thoughts aloud, the twenty people all felt the same in their hearts and simply wept quietly.
