かる時は地心より地上まて凡二千五百里なり此図

時は僅に図する所の小円の中に当れり是を以
て震動する所の徴少なると地球の広大なる事を
思ひはかるへし
○愚按するに天地の中造化皆本末あり本とは根本に
して心なり心とは震動する所の至て猛-烈なる所をさ
す其 心より四方へ散して漸々柔緩なるを末とすしかれ
は東より揺来るに非らす西より動き来るにあらす其心
より揺初て四方に至り其限は段々微動にて畢るならん
今度震動する所京師を心として近国に亘り末は東
武南紀北越西四国中国に抵る又京師の中にても西北
の方 心なりしや其時東山にて此地震に遇し人まつ西
山何となく気立升りて忽市中土煙をたてゝ揺来り
初めて地震なる事を知れりとなり

この場合、地心より地上まで凡そ二千五百里である。この図の黒点の間は凡そ一千里である。【注】今回の地震の範囲を二百里と見る時は、わずかに図示した小円の中に当たる。これをもって震動する所の微少さと地球の広大さを思い測るべきである。
○私見によれば、天地の中で造化にはすべて本末がある。本とは根本であって心である。心とは震動する所の極めて猛烈な所を指す。その心より四方へ散って漸々と柔らかく緩やかになるのを末とする。したがって東より揺れ来るのではなく、西より動き来るのでもなく、その心より揺れ始めて四方に至り、その限界は段々と微動で終わるのであろう。今回震動した所は京師を心として近国に及び、末は東武・南紀・北越・西四国・中国に達する。また京師の中でも西北の方が心であったのか。その時東山でこの地震に遭った人は、まず西山が何となく気が立ち上がり、たちまち市中で土煙を立てて揺れ来て、初めて地震であることを知ったということである。
○また地震に前兆のあることは現実に見た所では、当年六月二十五日、日輪が西山に沈むその色が血のようであった。同じく七月四日に月が沈むその色もまた同様であった。『和漢合運』によれば、寛文二年壬寅三月六日より二十日まで、日が朝夕血のようで月もまた同様、五月朔日に大地震があり、五条石橋が落ち、朽木谷が崩れ、土民が死に、七月まで止まなかった。広島氏の記録では、享和三年十一月

○In my opinion, in all creation between heaven and earth, there is a root and an end. The root is the foundation, which is the center. The center refers to the place where seismic activity is most intense. What spreads from this center in all four directions and gradually becomes gentler and more moderate is called the end. Therefore, it does not shake from the east, nor does it move from the west, but rather it begins shaking from its center and reaches the four directions, with its limits gradually ending in minor tremors. The area that shook this time had Kyōshi (Kyoto) as its center, extending to nearby provinces, with its ends reaching Tōbu (Eastern Japan), Nanki (Southern Kii), Hokuetsu (Northern Echigo), Western Shikoku, and Chūgoku regions. Even within Kyōshi itself, the northwest seemed to be the center. A person who experienced this earthquake at Higashiyama said that first, something seemed to stir up from Nishiyama, then suddenly dust rose in the city center and shaking came, and only then did they realize it was an earthquake.
