諸用ありて佐渡の国 小木（ヲキ）といふ湊に滞留せしに同十五
日の朝なりしか同宿の船かゝりせし船頭とともに日和を
見むとて近辺なる丘へ出しに船頭のいはく今日の天気
は誠にあやしけなり四方 濛々として雲山の腰にたれ山の
半腹より上は峰あらはれたり雨とも見へず風になるとも
覚へす我年来かくのことき天気を見すと大にあやしむ此
時広島氏考て曰是は雲のたるゝにあらす地気の上昇す
るならん予幼年のとき父に聞ける事有地気の上昇す
るは地震の徴也と暫時も猶余有へからすと急き旅宿に帰
り主に其由をつけ此地後は山前は海にして甚危し又来
るにも暫時外の地にのかれんと人をして荷物なと先へ送
しをそこ〳〵に支度して立出ぬ道の程四里計も行とおも
ひしが山中にて果して大地震せり地は浪のうつことく揺
て大木なと枝みな地を打ふしまろひなから漸くにのかれ
て去りぬ此時 小木の湊は山崩れ堂塔は倒れ潮漲て舎屋
咸（ミナ）海に入大きなる岩海より海（ママ）出たり【注】それより毎日小動し
て翌年六月に漸々止たりとなん其後同国金山にいたり
し時去る地震には定めし穴も潰れ人も損せしにやと訪ひ
しにさはなく皆いふ此地はむかしより地震は已前にしり
ぬ去る地震も三日以前に其 徴を知りて皆穴に入らす用意せし

諸用があって佐渡国の小木（おき）という港に滞在していたところ、同じく十五日の朝であったか、同宿の船が係留されていた船頭と共に天候を見ようと近辺の丘へ出た時、船頭が言うには「今日の天気は誠に奇妙である。四方がもやもやと霞んで雲が山の腰に垂れ下がり、山の中腹より上は峰が現れている。雨が降るようにも見えず、風になるようにも思えない。私は長年このような天気を見たことがない」と大いに怪しんだ。この時、広島氏は考えて言った「これは雲が垂れ下がっているのではなく、地気が上昇しているのであろう。私が幼年の時、父に聞いたことがある。地気の上昇は地震の前兆である」と、しばらくの猶予もあってはならないと急いで旅宿に帰り、主人にその由を告げ「この地は後ろは山、前は海で甚だ危険である。また、しばらく他の地に避難しよう」と人に荷物などを先に送らせ、そこそこに支度して立ち出た。道のりを四里ほども行ったと思った頃、山中で果たして大地震が起こった。地は波が打つように揺れ、大木などの枝はみな地を打ち、転がりながらようやく逃れて去った。この時、小木の港は山崩れし、堂塔は倒れ、潮が満ちて家屋はすべて海に入り、大きな岩が海より湧き出た。【注】それより毎日小さな揺れが続き、翌年六月にようやく止んだということである。その後、同国の金山に至った時「先の地震には定めて坑道も潰れ、人も被害を受けたであろう」と尋ねたところ、そうではなく、皆が言うには「この地は昔より地震は以前から知っている。先の地震も三日前にその前兆を知って、皆坑道に入らず用意をしていた」

Having various business matters, I was staying at a port called Ogi in Sado Province. On the morning of the 15th of the same month, I went out to a nearby hill with a ship captain whose vessel was moored at the same lodging, intending to observe the weather. The captain said, "Today's weather is truly strange. All around is hazy and misty, with clouds hanging around the base of the mountains, while the peaks above the middle slopes are visible. It doesn't look like rain, nor does it seem like it will become windy. I have never seen such weather in all my years," and he was greatly puzzled. At this time, Hiroshima-shi reflected and said, "This is not clouds hanging down, but rather earth vapors rising upward. When I was young, I heard from my father that the rising of earth vapors is a sign of earthquakes," and saying there should be no delay even for a moment, he hurried back to the inn and told the master, "This place is very dangerous with mountains behind and the sea in front. Let us evacuate to another place for a while." He had people send the luggage ahead, made preparations hastily, and departed. After traveling what seemed like about four ri along the road, a great earthquake indeed occurred while in the mountains. The ground swayed like beating waves, and the branches of large trees all struck the ground. Rolling along, we barely managed to escape and leave. At this time, at Ogi port, mountains collapsed, temple towers fell, the tide surged and all houses entered the sea, and large rocks emerged from the sea.
