同し調子なるは此も悪所と覚ゆ愛宕には知れる坊あり
是に誘ひゆけといふいさとて又登り〳〵て其坊に着く
坊主出て何とてかく早〳〵とは登山しけるよし申せしかは
しか〳〵の事有と答ふこゝはいかにと問こゝも猶安からす
少しにても高き所へ参りたしと言其所に護摩堂あり此に
行れとありしかは此堂に入て大によろこひ扨々安堵に住
せり調子初て直りしとて唯いつまても此に居たき由申
せしか頓て地震ゆり出し夥しき事いふはかりなし《割書：世間｜に云》
《割書：寅年大｜地震》何とかしたりけむ彼護摩堂は架作（タナツクリ）にて頓て深谷へ
崩れ落て破損し四方市も空しくなる六十余計りにて
も有へきか此一生の終りをして人の吉凶さへ姦きほと
に知るものゝ己か終る所をしらさるのみ非す死場にて
安堵しける事こそ不審なれ吉の極る所は凶凶の極る所
は吉なれは成へし毎度無禅か物語なりと仰らる愚按に
四方市の占考著き事賞するに余り有既に天地の変異
を知りて愛宕山にのかれしとうへなるかな此山に至りて
調子直りしに其変もあんなれ共是は陰極りて陽に変
し陽極りて陰を生す楽極りて哀生すといふに同しか
らむ其頃は京師一般の大変故震気充満して歩むに道
なく逃るに所なしと言時なれは四方市も身体茲に極る

同じ調子であるのは、ここも悪い場所と思われる。愛宕には知っている坊がある。そこに連れて行け」と言う。そこでまた登り登りして、その坊に着いた。坊主が出てきて「なぜこんなに早々と登山されたのですか」と申したので、「しかじかの事がある」と答える。「ここはどうか」と問うと「ここもまだ安心できない。少しでも高い所へ参りたい」と言う。その所に護摩堂があり、「ここに行かれよ」とあったので、この堂に入って大いに喜び「さてさて安堵に住んだ。調子が初めて直った」と言って、ただいつまでもここにいたい旨を申したが、やがて地震が揺り出し、激しいことは言うばかりもない《割書：世間に言う寅年大地震》。どうしたことであろうか、あの護摩堂は棚作りで、やがて深い谷へ崩れ落ちて破損し、四方市も空しくなった。六十余歳ばかりであったろうか。この一生の終わりにして、人の吉凶さえ聞き分けるほどに知る者が、己が終わる所を知らないのみならず、死場で安堵したことこそ不審である。吉の極まる所は凶、凶の極まる所は吉であるからであろう。毎度無禅の物語であると仰せられる。愚按に、四方市の占いが優れていることは賞賛するに余りある。既に天地の変異を知って愛宕山に逃れたとは上手なことである。この山に至って調子が直ったのに、その変もあるのだろうが、これは陰極まって陽に変じ、陽極まって陰を生じ、楽極まって哀しみ生ずというのと同じであろう。その頃は京師一般の大変故、震気が充満して歩むに道なく、逃げるに所なしという時であるから、四方市も身体がここに極まる

"The same sound means this place too seems to be a bad location. There is a temple I know on Mount Atago. Take me there," he said. So they climbed up and up again until they reached that temple. A monk came out and asked, "Why have you climbed the mountain so early?" to which he answered, "Such and such things are happening." When asked "How is this place?" he said, "This place is still not safe either. I want to go to somewhere even a little higher." There was a Goma Hall at that location, and when told "Go to this hall," he entered the hall with great joy and said, "At last I can dwell in peace. The sound has finally been corrected," expressing his desire to stay there forever. Soon after, earthquakes began shaking violently beyond description 《marginal note: what people call the great earthquake of the Tiger year》. What happened was that the Goma Hall was built on scaffolding and soon collapsed into a deep valley, breaking apart, and Shikata Ichi also perished. He was probably around sixty years old. At the end of this lifetime, a person who knew enough to discern others' fortunes and misfortunes not only did not know where his own end would come, but found peace at his death place—this is indeed mysterious. Where good reaches its extreme becomes bad, and where bad reaches its extreme becomes good. This is always a tale of Muzen, it is said. In my humble opinion, Shikata Ichi's divination skills were more than praiseworthy. Having already known of heaven and earth's anomalies and escaped to Mount Atago was skillful indeed. Though the sound was corrected when he reached this mountain, there was still this change—this is the same as yin reaching its extreme and changing to yang, yang reaching its extreme and giving birth to yin, and joy reaching its extreme giving birth to sorrow. At that time, because of the great disaster throughout the capital, earthquake energy filled everything, leaving no road to walk and no place to flee, so Shikata Ichi's body also reached its limit here.
