安永年間大島山火災の県令江川への上書等の本末を訳す
臣江川の管理所に属する豆州大島中の三原山の火口周辺数里は、砂礫土で草木の生えない場所である。今年七月二十九日申の刻（午後）に火口中から俄かに火が出て、赤い煙がたなびき天を衝き、爆発音は雷のごとく、地が度々動いた。その時飛散する髪の毛のような灰は、長さ一寸から二、三寸の黒白色のものであり、また鉄の溶液のような灰と混じっていた。今月六日には大雨が夜通し降り、炎の勢いと爆発音がやや激しくなった。七日には特に甚だしく、地は依然として動き、灰が度々降り、十一日まで止まなかった。男女は恐怖し生業を廃した。島中の父老の中には天和年間の島の火災を記憶する者がいるため、その例に従い島民は男女を問わず、穢れのない者が海に入り垢離を取り、諸村の神社で救命を祈った。島の習俗では山火災が天和年間および今年のようであることを神の

Translation of the records and documents regarding the Ōshima volcanic eruption during the An'ei period, submitted to Magistrate Egawa
The area several ri around the crater of Mount Mihara on Ōshima in Izu Province, under the jurisdiction of retainer Egawa's administrative office, consists of sandy and gravelly soil where no vegetation grows. This year, on the 29th day of the 7th month, in the afternoon, fire suddenly erupted from within the crater. Red smoke billowed up piercing the sky, explosive sounds like thunder occurred, and the ground shook repeatedly. At that time, hair-like ash particles flew about, one to two or three sun in length, black and white in color, mixed with iron liquid-like ash. On the 6th of this month, heavy rain fell throughout the night, and the flames and explosive sounds became somewhat more intense. On the 7th day it was particularly severe; the ground continued to shake, ash fell repeatedly, and this did not stop until the 11th day. Men and women were terrified and abandoned their occupations. Among the island's elders, some remember the island fire during the Tenna period, so following that precedent, islanders regardless of gender, those without defilement, entered the sea for purification rituals, and prayed for salvation of life at shrines in various villages.
