○三原の火は、だんだんと消えかかっていたが、九月八日にまた激しく燃え上がった。島の役人の報告が前月二十四日に大役所に届いた。以前は火が中野沢で発生していたが、今はすでに消え、三原の南西方向で、山の丘が焼けて裂け、火が赤沢に下り、日夜火が盛んに燃え、煙気が天に横たわり、夜通し海を照らし、爆発音が特に激しく、大石が千仞の谷から落ちる音のようで、地震も大きかった。赤沢は差木地村と野増村の中間にあり、広さは二丈に満たず、深さは一丈半余り、長さは海浜まで十八里ほどである。大石が崩れ裂けて沢の辺りに縦横に散らばり、草木は枯れ凋み、野増村の畑中の作物はすべて乾死し、焼けた石が重なり積もって二村の通行を絶った。木の葉は灰となって飛び散り周囲五村に及んだ。島民は大いに驚き、明け方前に浜に集まって水浴し新社に祈った。島からの報告が再び届き、沢辺の延焼図を添えて、謹んで上言する。戊戌十月六日、臣江川某。

The volcanic activity was particularly fierce, and in mid-1st month of this year the fire blazed intensely, then somewhat subsided in late 1st month.
○ The fire of Mount Mihara had been gradually dying down, but on the 8th day of the 9th month it flared up violently again. The island officials' report reached the main government office on the 24th day of last month. Previously, the fire had erupted at Nakano-sawa, but now it has already died out. In the southwest direction of Mihara, the mountain hills cracked and burned, fire descended to Aka-sawa, flames burned fiercely day and night, smoke stretched across the sky, illuminating the sea all night long, and explosive sounds were particularly intense, like the sound of great stones falling from thousand-fathom valleys. The earthquakes were also severe. Aka-sawa is located between Sasaki-chi village and Nomasu village, less than two jō wide, one and a half jō deep, and about eighteen ri long extending to the seashore. From downstream of Chiri-sawa to the sea spans eighteen ri, and the current burned area extends six ri in each direction, advancing into the sea and battling the tide for sixty steps, about six ri wide. Molten great stones lie scattered, filling the sea. The force of flames is like swift thunder, making no distinction between day and night. The roaring sounds from within the earth are most severe, and at night smoke and light blaze red. The islanders can do nothing but bathe in water and pray at shrines.
