上州利根郡東小川村地内で荒山と呼ばれている山は、同村の人家から五里ほど離れて両野の国境にあり、東西は野州中禅寺、同国では白根山と呼び、西面はすなわち荒山で、郡中第一の高山でございますが、当四月上旬より煙が立ち、折々鳴動いたしましたので、右の村はもちろん、同山より流水が流れてくる品川通り両縁の村々では恐怖し苦情を申しております趣を聞きましたので、本月七日に捕亡手の者両人を取締りを兼ねて見分のため差し遣わしましたところ、見分の始末は別紙書付並びに粗絵図面の通りで、その中で村役人

Report submitted regarding the matter of smoke rising
from Mount Arayama within the territory of Higashi-Ogawa
Village, Tone District, Jōshū Province
The mountain called Arayama within the territory of Higashi-Ogawa Village, Tone District, Jōshū Province, is located about five ri away from the houses of the same village at the border of Ryōya, where to the east and west lies Chūzenji of Yashū Province, called Mount Shirane in the same province, and the western face is Mount Arayama, which is the highest mountain in the district. From early April of this year, smoke has been rising and it has been rumbling from time to time. Consequently, not only the aforementioned village but also the villages on both sides along the Shinagawa route, where water flows from the same mountain, have expressed fear and complaints. Having heard of this situation, on the 7th of this month we dispatched two men from the fugitive apprehension unit for inspection as well as supervision.
