からも訴え出がありましたので、さらに詳しく調べたところ、従来煙が立つようなことは見聞きしておらず、今回のことも四月八日頃から煙が立つのを見つけたということで、何月頃からこのような状況になったのかは不明であるとのことでした。もともと同山は焼山で、山の六、七分目より上は草木がまったく生えておらず、麓は野州中禅寺、上州東小川村ともに温泉があることから、硫黄の火気が充満して焼け出し、土中や石の間から煙が吹き出しているものと思われます。出役の捕亡吏にも詳しく尋ねたところ、鳴動というほどのこともなく、まずは当分のうちに異変等はないように見受けられますが、これまで村の古老をはじめ煙が立つようなことは見聞きしていない場所であるため、浅間ヶ嶽の天明年間の変事を伝え聞いているので、一同心配しております

Originally, this mountain is a volcanic mountain, and from about six or seven-tenths up the mountain, no vegetation grows at all, while at the foot there are hot springs in both Chūzenji in Yashū Province and Higashi-Ogawa Village in Jōshū Province. Therefore, it is believed that sulfurous gases are filling the area and burning out, with smoke blowing out from the soil and between rocks. When we inquired thoroughly with the dispatched fugitive apprehension officers, there was nothing that could be called rumbling, and for now there appears to be no sign of any unusual changes. However, since this is a location where the village elders and others have never seen or heard of smoke rising before, and having heard tales of the Asama-ga-take eruption during the Tenmei era, everyone is deeply concerned
