やしきものゝ草津白根満坐等の山にとひわたれりな
といひて人々奇異のおもひをなし神仏【佛】に祈祷

一八日四時山いたくなりて大地をとゝろかし砂を
とはしなみをまきて吾妻の川通に押いたしかま
原郡より大前村を始めとしてかはつき【川沿い】の村々家
かこひ其外の数る年をへたたる老木みなおしぬけ【押抜け】
りしはらくありて泥と火とをふきいたし山の上【山の山」と書き、下の「山」を見せ消ちにして右横に「上」と列記】百

一吾妻川かわつきの村々おされおほれて死する人
甚夥しくところ〳〵の寺にて供養ありありけるはあ

一川筋村々田畠人馬流死之次第

に棚引き、火炎が東西にひらめき、人の形をした
怪しいものが草津・白根・満座等の山に飛び回った
などと言って、人々は奇異に思い、神仏に祈祷
するなど、実に頼りない有様である。
一、八日四時、山が激しく鳴って大地を轟かせ、砂を
飛ばし波を巻いて吾妻川の流域に押し流し、鎌
原郡より大前村を始めとして川沿いの村々の家や
垣根、その外の数える年を経た古い老木をみな押し抜いて
しまった。しばらくして泥と火とを噴き出し、山の上百
丈ほど明るくなって一時間ほどはすべて闇み、夜のように

平坦なところがたちまちにして一面の泥の海となった。
深いところは一丈二尺、浅いところも五尺七尺
に降り積もった。その中に火石が混じって燃え続けるのも
三十日余りにも及んだという。
一、吾妻川沿いの村々が押し流され埋もれて死する人が
甚だ夥しく、所々の寺で供養が行われたのは
哀れなことであった。

and raising waves that rushed down the Agatsuma River valley. Starting from
Kambara District with Ōmae Village, houses and
fences in riverside villages, as well as ancient old trees that had stood for countless years, were all swept away.
After a while, it spewed mud and fire, the mountaintop became bright for about a hundred
jō, and for about an hour everything went dark, like night.

The light of fire pierced the sky, thundering like lightning, and rice fields and
flat areas instantly became a sea of mud.
Deep places accumulated one jō and two shaku, even shallow places five to seven shaku
of deposits. Fire stones mixed within continued burning for
more than thirty days.
