キ砂子降出シ硫黄之匂ひ甚敷人々恐畏致居候処【處】同九
時頃ニ至リ漸ク右物音砂降リ共相鎮リ一同安堵ノ思ヲ
致シ候得共右白根山之方烟リ花ノ如クニ相見へ未曾有
之珍事ニ御坐候間猶実地見届之上巨細御届万申上候

第二大区九小区戸長代理が申し上げます。当三月十二日午後三時頃より、日光中宮祠山に続く戌亥の方角の白根山の方向に、急に空の様子が砂煙のように見え、その中で大きな物音が天地に轟き、砂が降り出し、硫黄の匂いが甚だしく、人々は恐れおののいておりましたが、同日九時頃に至り、ようやく右の物音と砂降りも鎮まり、一同安堵の思いをいたしました。しかし右の白根山の方角には煙が花のように見え、未曾有の珍しい出来事でございますので、なお実地見分の上で詳細をお届け申し上げることになりますが、取り急ぎこの段お届け申し上げます。以上

The acting head of the 2nd Large District, 9th Small District respectfully reports: From around 3 PM on the 12th day of the current 3rd month, in the direction of Mount Shirane toward the west-northwest, continuing from Mount Chūgūshi in Nikkō, the sky suddenly appeared like sand and smoke. Amid this, loud sounds reverberated through heaven and earth, sand began falling, the smell of sulfur was intense, and people were filled with fear and awe. However, around 9 PM on the same day, the sounds and falling sand finally subsided, and everyone felt relieved. Nevertheless, smoke from the direction of Mount Shirane appeared like flowers - an unprecedented and remarkable event. We will conduct an on-site inspection and submit detailed reports, but we urgently submit this preliminary report.
