君は見ないか、堯の水害、湯王の旱魃もまた天の災いであったが、天心を挽回して休祥を致したことを。今ただ必要なのは天を補う手段である。禍を転じて福となす方法がないはずがない。ああ、禍を転じて福となす方法がないはずがない。

井元行賢が記すところによると、黛（まゆずみ）とは新吉原街佐野槌楼の名娼である。初めは阿兼と称した。年わずか二歳で父母と別れ、他人の養育を受けた。八歳で売られて娼家に入った。主人は甚だ謹直であった。成長すると姿色は艶やかに咲き誇り、見る者の魂を蕩かし神を迷わせた。安政乙卯（二年、一八五五年）十月二日夜二更、関東に大地震があり、江戸は甚だしい被害を受けた。家屋の崩壊に至り、火災が後に発生し、災いは他にも及んだ。魚のように圧死した者は万を数えた。幕府は仮設建物を建てて貧民を住まわせ、飢えと露宿を免れさせた。恩恵を受けた者は数千名であった。黛はこれを聞いて髪飾りを売り、三十金を得て行平鍋一千六十余個を買い、それを仮設建物内に施した。その意図は、幼時に別れた父母に遇うことと、また情客の冥福を修することであった。決して名を求め報いを求めてした行為ではなかった。この事が官に聞こえ、銀二枚を賜り、これを褒めて表彰した。ここにおいて黛の名は東都に響いた。

According to what Imoto Gyōken records: Mayuzumi was a famous courtesan of the Sanotsuji pleasure house on Shin-Yoshiwara street. Initially called Akane, she was separated from her parents at merely two years of age and raised by others. At eight years old, she was sold into a brothel. Her master was very upright. When she matured, her beauty bloomed brilliantly, causing all who saw her to be entranced and bewildered. On the night of the second day of the tenth month of Ansei 2 (1855), year of the wood rabbit, at the second watch, a great earthquake struck the Kantō region, and Edo suffered tremendously. Buildings collapsed, fires broke out afterward, and disaster spread elsewhere. Those crushed to death like fish numbered in the tens of thousands. The government erected temporary buildings to house the poor, saving them from hunger and exposure. Those who received this benevolence numbered several thousand. Hearing of this, Mayuzumi sold her hair ornaments, obtained thirty gold pieces, purchased over 1,060 cooking pots, and distributed them within the temporary shelters. Her intention was both to potentially encounter the parents from whom she had been separated in childhood and to pray for the souls of her deceased patrons. This was decidedly not done to seek fame or reward. When this matter reached official ears, she was granted two silver pieces in recognition and commendation. Thus Mayuzumi's name resounded throughout the Eastern Capital.
