冤賊有一商主将諸
商人齎持重宝経過険路
其中一人作是唱言
諸善男子勿得恐怖
汝等応当一心称
観世音菩薩名号
是菩薩能以無畏
施於衆生
汝等若称名者
於此冤賊当得
解脱衆商人聞
倶発声言
南無観世音菩薩称其名故
即得解脱

現代語訳
もし三千大千国土に満ちるほどの怨賊がいたとして、ある商人の頭領が多くの商人たちを連れ、貴重な宝物を携えて険しい道を通り過ぎようとしていた時、その中の一人がこのように声高に言った。「善良な男子たちよ、恐れてはいけない。あなた方は一心に観世音菩薩の名号を称えなさい。この菩薩は衆生に無畏を施すことができるのです。あなた方がもしその名を称えるならば、この怨賊に対して解脱を得ることができるでしょう。」多くの商人たちはこれを聞いて、皆で声を揃えて「南無観世音菩薩」と言った。その名を称えたことによって、ただちに解脱を得たのである。

英語訳
If there were bandits filling the entire three-thousand-great-thousand-world system, and a merchant leader was traveling with many merchants, carrying precious treasures through dangerous roads, one person among them would speak out loud saying: "Good men, do not be afraid. You should single-mindedly call upon the name of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva. This Bodhisattva can bestow fearlessness upon all sentient beings. If you call upon this name, you will obtain liberation from these bandits." The many merchants, hearing this, all raised their voices together saying "Namo Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva." By calling upon this name, they immediately obtained liberation.
