This is the third dojo among the four historic sites established by Zen Master Tsugen, descendant of the sixth generation of Eiheiji Genzanji Temple. Tracing its origins, in the third year of Eitoku, the year of Mizunoto-i (1383), Sasaki Rokkaku Hangan Ujiyori founded a monastery in Kashiwabara village, Shinjo, Omi Province, and invited our Zen Master Tsugen to serve as abbot. All manner of implements were prepared and monk-treasures gathered competitively. As things changed and stars shifted, by the time of the eighth generation Etsu-o, the Sasaki clan was destroyed. At this time various provinces were fighting over territory, and the various states rose up like a swarm of bees. Because of this, in the third year of Kyoroku, the year of Kanoe-tora (1530), Asahina Bichu-no-kami Kyoo, a retainer of the Imagawa clan of Suruga Province, resided at Joanji Temple in Kakegawa, Totomi Province for some years. This was presumably to avoid warfare. By the eleventh generation Gi-o, in the third year of Tensho, the year of Kinoto-i (1575), Hojo Ujimasa, revering the master's virtue, donated temple grounds at Sekijuku in Honshu Province, gathered materials and commanded craftsmen to construct halls as splendid as jewels, making it prosperous again. The Tsugen way flourished greatly and newly enriched the mystical teachings. By the seventeenth generation Kotszan, in the third year of Genna, mid-month of early summer in the year of Hinoto-mi (1617), flood waters flowed backwards and the temple buildings sank beneath the land. When this was reported to the shogunal court, Lord Taitokuin Daisokoku separately granted temple grounds and provided relief with a thousand bales of rice, rebuilding the temple buildings here, doubling the previous scale. However, the location was still squeezed between two provinces, and when floods rose, it would suffer disasters from the water deity, with the full hall...
