最明寺（時頼）より後の勅使を越後の守光時と見顕し、上使の趣きは関白の姫を養子にしたのは成長の後、親王と結婚させ謀反の根差しがあると疑い、養子にしたあや子姫の首を討つべしとの上意。差し当たり難題ゆえ、何とせんと常世に問い、梅桜松の茂りを以て占いを引いて見る。

常世（松本幸四郎）、我が子玉梓を綾子姫の身代わりにせんとした。付いて来た女房にわざとつれなく当たり、謀反人浅原が妹なることを知り、離縁状を渡し、後に離縁も間近いのを見て真実を明かし愁嘆する。
白妙、若身を悔み自害して身代わりの様子を聞き、夫の心志を喜び、往生を遂げた。

The imperial messenger after Saimyōji (Tokiyori) is revealed to be Echigo no Kami Mitsutoki. The imperial envoy's message is that the Kanpaku's daughter who was adopted is suspected of having seditious intentions after growing up and marrying the Prince, and therefore Princess Ayako, who was adopted, should be beheaded by imperial command. This being a pressing difficult matter, [Tokiyori] asks Tsuneyo what should be done, and they divine by drawing lots using the flourishing of plum, cherry, and pine trees.

Tsuneyo (Matsumoto Kōshirō) intended to make his own daughter Tamazusa serve as substitute for Princess Ayako. He deliberately treats his accompanying wife coldly, and knowing that she is the sister of the rebel Asahara, he gives her a divorce document. Later, seeing that the divorce is near, he reveals the truth and laments.
Shirotae regrets her young life and commits suicide. Hearing about the substitution plan, she rejoices in her husband's loyalty and passes away peacefully.
