眼たゝく間に焼失ひて二王門へ吹なくる火勢取
わけて恐しく二王尊を始め迦羅仏の尊像
毘沙門大黒の両王を焼損ひ早くも左右の
見世店へ吹懸ヶ連〳〵たる火勢増〳〵盛んなり
しかるかうちにも横山宇木相之木辺とおほしく
また東町岩石町新町辺もかくなりける也
いづれを先いづれを後とも其程をわかたす新
道口は西之門桜小路阿弥陀院何れを限り
共わかたず市町一面の火気空にうつり
倒家の下たには圧死人の啼叫声親を慕ひ

子を叫る声神仏祈念の音喧敷【やかましく】また憐れ
にして此上のなり行を悲歎する事おほかた【大方】ならす
しかするうちも地震鳴動する事夥しく呵責の
苦患も是まてとやるかたなくそ居たりける我家に
帰らんにも一面の大火何とも不能思慮爰に又
庄五郎は我家に行て安否を尋ん事を談合
す我家も何鹿火の中なるへし万に
ひとつもいまた火のかゝらすは家財はかならす
恪【きまじめに保持する】にあらす御制札と書物をは何とかして
取出し若も我家の焼失し是迚も遁れ

現代語訳

瞬く間に焼失して二王門へ吹きなびく火勢は取り分けて恐ろしく、二王尊を始め迦羅仏の尊像、毘沙門大黒の両王を焼き損ない、早くも左右の見世店へ吹きかかり、連なる火勢がますます盛んになった。そうしているうちにも横山・宇木・相之木辺りと思われ、また東町・岩石町・新町辺りもこのようになった。いずれを先、いずれを後とも、その区別も分からず、新道口は西之門・桜小路・阿弥陀院、いずれを境とも分からず、市町一面の火気が空に映り、倒壊した家の下には圧死した人の泣き叫ぶ声、親を慕い子を叫ぶ声、神仏祈念の音がやかましく、また憐れで、この上の成り行きを悲嘆することは大方ではない。

そうしているうちも地震が鳴動することおびただしく、呵責の苦患もこれまでと、やるかたなく座っていた。我が家に帰ろうにも一面の大火で何とも思慮できず、ここにまた庄五郎は我が家に行って安否を尋ねることを談合する。我が家もどこか火の中にあるだろう。万に一つも、いまだ火のかからないのは、家財は必ずしも大事に保持するのではなく、御制札と書物をはなんとかして取り出し、もしも我が家の焼失し、これとても逃れ

In the blink of an eye it was burned down, and the fire spreading toward Niō-mon (the Two Kings Gate) was especially terrifying. It burned and damaged the Two Kings statues, the sacred images of Kara Buddha, and both kings Bishamon and Daikoku, quickly spreading to the shops on both sides, with the continuous flames growing ever more intense. Meanwhile, what appeared to be the Yokoyama, Uki, and Ainoki areas, as well as Higashi-machi, Iwaseki-machi, and Shin-machi areas had also become like this. Unable to distinguish which came first and which came after, at Shindō-guchi there was Nishinomon, Sakura-kōji, and Amida-in - unable to determine any boundaries, the fire from the entire merchant quarter reflected in the sky. Under the collapsed houses were the screaming voices of those crushed to death, voices calling for parents and crying for children, and the sounds of prayers to gods and buddhas - all clamorous and pitiful, with grief over what would happen next being beyond measure.

Even if by some miracle it had not yet caught fire, household goods need not necessarily be carefully preserved, but the official notice boards and books must somehow be retrieved.
