My wife and children clung to me and cared for me, earnestly praying for the compassionate acceptance of the gods and Buddha, beseeching them to help and save me once more - we could only grieve and lament.
At such a moment, someone said - though it was unclear who - "Now fire has reached the mountain gate, and the main hall is also in danger. We must quickly flee from this place." So once again, everyone tried to be first, abandoning the elderly and carrying the young, fleeing without looking back. With such a severe illness, having no place to rest, I clung to shoulders and grasped waists, making the green barley field to the east of the irrigation embankment my lodging. For my sickbed there was only a single thin mat. As my fever raged violently and my feet grew cold, my wife and children huddled close, loosening their hem clothing to make a kotatsu and tend to me. My condition gradually grew colder, and with only the night wind, they were entirely absorbed in nursing me - the pitifulness was beyond comparison.
At such a time, hearing the voices of many people chanting the nembutsu, wondering what was happening, I gazed as the great fire illuminated and gradually drew nearer from the shade of trees, and saw that the precious Buddhist statues transmitted through the three countries were...
