(Continued from previous page) —wore court dress (ikan) and performed the partial offering service (kata goryō). The court robes and accessories had been previously requisitioned through the Three-Office Book Magistrates (sante shoseki bugyō). **Bunsei 7 (Kinoe-Saru / 1824)** **First Month (a long month of 30 days)** **New Year's Day (Kinoto-Ushi), Fine weather.** The shrine precincts were peaceful and quiet—most auspicious! Early in the morning, the New Year's sacred rites were performed. In place of the vacant ujigami hafuri position, the daikan official of Junior Fourth Rank Lower Grade (shōshii ge), Keisen, attended. At the half-quarter of the Hour of the Tiger (approximately 4:00 a.m.), when the shrine servants (jinnin) gave the first announcement of the procession, he took his ritual bath (yokutō); at the second announcement, he donned his sokutai (full court dress); and before the third announcement of the procession, he left his gate. He took with him one white-robed attendant (hakuchō) to carry his shoes, advanced from behind the screen (kiribyo) of the bathhouse, put on his shoes before the Nara Shrine, performed a single bow (ippai), and then ascended through the southwest entrance of the侍所 (samurai quarters). He took his seat at the upper-west, south-facing position in the next room (designated for the hafuri group). The shoe-bow (kutsu yū) and seated bow (zayū) were performed in the customary manner. When all twenty-one shrine officials (shashi) had assembled, the superintendent (shoshi) Kensei entered through the east entrance and asked whether the sacred offerings (shinku) should now be set up, since everyone had gathered. Shrine chief (kannagi) Lord Nobuhira replied that they should proceed. Each person rose from their seat; after washing their hands (temizu) at the north entrance as they wished, they descended through the southwest entrance and put on their shoes. When passing before the Nara Shrine, they performed the crossing-bow (ōka no yū); proceeding through the Third Torii, the Nara Bridge, the Second Torii, and so forth, they arrived and took their seats in the Tsuchiya (earthen building). The hafuri group sat at the upper-west, south-facing position, ascending by going around the east eave. The shoe-bow and seated bow were performed as customary. Next, when the sacred offerings began their procession, the shrine officials, remaining seated, each made a reverent bow (keikutsu); after the offerings had passed, they all rose. The negi (junior priests) proceeded via the Negi Bridge, and the hafuri (senior priests) via the Hafuri Bridge; at the southern side of the Tama Bridge, the Onmyō Dayū (Master of Yin-Yang), wearing court dress, stood and purified (harae) the bodies of the shrine officials one by one. Each held their ceremonial baton (shaku) upright and received the purification. After performing a single bow at the Suwa and Kataoka Shrines, the negi group proceeded via the Tama Bridge and the hafuri group via the Watadono (passage building), advancing from the Shinmiya Gate to the Tang Gate (Karamon). After completing the circuit worship (junpai) of the various shrines, they ascended through the space between the west pillars of the Wakamiya Worship Hall. At that time, with trailing robes (suigyo), each performed a single bow within the Tang-style doors at approximately the designated seating position, then sat down, performed the seated bow, and arranged their robes. The arrangement was: from the head hafuri (shōhafuri) down to the Shinmiya hafuri, they faced south; from the Ōta hafuri down to the ujigami hafuri, they faced north. Next, when the sacred doors were opened, each performed the duty of seated prostration (kinza/ heifuku). Then, two persons at a time— (continues)
