28th day (Kanoto-Tori, 辛酉): Clear. Today was the day to bring out the ceremonial robes (装束) needed for the horse-racing foot selection (足汰) on the coming 1st day. Accordingly, the Costume Magistrates (装束奉行) Yoshihisa and Shinakiyo, along with the current district officials (代官) Yasuyuki and Yasunori, and the former district officials Fujonin and Hitokoaki, all dressed in formal white robes (浄衣) with sashinuki trousers, and promptly appeared after breakfast. The robes were transported from Takakura in long trunks (長櫃) by laborers to the Imikoya (忌子屋, a ritual building). On the 1st, each of the riders (乗尻) came to receive their respective items. The robes for the chief priests (神主), the deputy (預), shrine administrators (所司), head priest deputies (別当), and proxy administrators (目代) were also handed over. ○ Regarding the receipt of the assignment documents (差符) on the coming 1st, Suenori was to make personal requests (入魂) to the riders of the Yamato-bumi and Kanatsu groups, and regarding the serving of drinks (酌) and the horse handlers (馬立) at the administrative hall (庁屋) on the 5th, following the precedent of previous years, personal requests were to be made to those wearing formal white robes—all of these were matters for Suenori to convey. However, on the 1st, one district official was to go to the area west of Narabashi Bridge wearing formal hemp formal wear (麻上下) to receive the assignment documents, which was also to be done by Suenori in person.
Fifth Month (大, a full month of 30 days)
1st day (Mizunoto-I, 癸亥): Cloudy; strong wind and rain in the afternoon. The horse-racing foot selection proceeded as usual. Suenori appeared in person today to receive the assignment documents (wearing hemp formal wear). ○ As the shrine community is observing austerity measures this year, the sleeve stipends (袖料) for the riders on this day were reduced by half.
3rd day (Kinoto-Ushi, 乙丑): Clear. In preparation for the handing out of ceremonial robes for the horse racing on the coming 5th, shortly after breakfast, the two Costume Magistrates, one former district official, and four current district officials—Yasuteru (acting for Chōken), Yasuyuki, Suenori, and Yasunori—all attended (three in formal white robes, one in a large katabira robe). Keisen, being the head of ritual abstinence (精進頭人), did not attend. The robes for the twenty riders, as well as for the chief priests, the two officials at the foot of the steps (両階下), and the diviners (陰陽), were brought out from Takakura and distributed to each party at the administrative hall (庁屋). However, after all items had been transported to the hall, laborers were instructed to ring the bell at the Jingūji temple, whereupon the riders each made their appearance. Furthermore, the items brought to the administrative hall today included: two wooden boards (片木), two inkstones (硯), two sticks of dragon-pattern ink (龍形墨), two pairs of white-haired white-handled brushes, and two assignment documents (差符) from the 1st day. ○ In the evening, the two officials at the foot of the steps, Suenori and Yasunori, conducted a rehearsal for the ritual offerings (奉幣習礼), and also proceeded to the retreat hall (参籠所) to coordinate with the riders regarding matters for the current month.
[Note: However, the chief priests' robes had been handed over together with the festival robes (節供の装束) at the time of the foot-selection robe distribution on the 28th of last month. Whether this has been the recent precedent is a matter that should be further inquired into.]
4th day (Hinoe-Tora, 丙寅): Rain. The items needed at the administrative hall for the following day were assembled and stored at Keisen's residence. Also, two shō of rice for the cords (乱緒) — forty strands for left and right — was provided by Keisen. This year, Minami no Tokuemon... (continues)
