(Continued from previous page) ...were assigned [to Minami no Tokuemon]. The items for the riders (乗尻) were distributed at Yasunori's residence.
5th day (Hinoto-U, 丁卯): Cloudy, thinly clearing from noon. After breakfast, lower-ranking attendants (下部) were instructed to transport the items needed by the district officials at the administrative hall (庁屋) today. ○ The two officials at the foot of the steps (両階下) attended: Suenori of the Left Division, at the rank of Junior Fourth Rank Lower Grade (正四位下), and Yasunori of the Right Division, at the rank of Senior Fourth Rank Upper Grade (従四位上). Each wore formal court dress (束帯) with the ceremonial sword (御剣). Supplying provisions at the administrative hall were Yasuteru (acting for Chōken) and Yasuyuki, both in formal white robes (浄衣) with sashinuki trousers. ○ Yasuteru (acting for Chōken) appeared for the early morning spear decoration (鉾錺) and for the closing ceremonies in the evening. ○ The preparation of binmizu (髻water used for grooming) and decorative cords (乱緒) was managed by Yasunori's side. ○ After Keisen struck the second large drum, he accompanied the heads of the riders (頭人中) to the main shrine precinct, where ten races were completed, after which all dispersed. This was around late申 hour (approximately 5–6 PM). ○ In the seventh race of the horse racing: Left side — Dōhō, Daiken, and Meguru; Right side — Kenkiyo (acting for Kakukiyo, age seventeen). Kakukiyo fell from his horse on the seventh return run. After that, the Left side surpassed by two rounds, the Right side by three, and by the sixth round it finally reached a draw. In any case, it was decided that neither side would be declared the winner. This was noted as a rare occurrence in recent years. ○ As the shrine is observing austerity measures this year, the sleeve stipend (袖料) for the riders was set at five to (斗) of rice. ○ Regarding the silver expenses for those at the foot of the steps (階下): following discussions and agreements this year, it was decided to fix the amount at ten momme (匁) per person. Accordingly, Keisen's share was transferred to Yasunori in advance.
○ Six shō of ritual sake was sent to the administrative hall today, but only five shō were used; the remaining one shō was returned.
7th day (Tsuchinoto-Mi, 己巳): Cloudy. Paid a visit to Suenori and Yasunori to express congratulations that all affairs of the officials' attendance at the foot of the steps two days prior had been completed without incident. ○ Regarding the four laborers needed for the following day, arrangements were made through the district officials to notify Gorōtarō.
8th day (Kanoe-Uma, 庚午): Clear. Today was the day for returning the ceremonial robes Shortly after breakfast, the two Costume Magistrates and the district officials each appeared at the administrative hall as on the 3rd (Keisen, being the head of ritual abstinence, did not attend). After everyone had assembled, the laborers were instructed to ring the bell at the Jingūji temple. At that signal, the chief priests (神主), the two officials at the foot of the steps (両階下), the head priest deputies (別当), the deputy (預), the shrine administrators (所司), the proxy administrators (目代), the diviners (陰陽; note: Taguchi was counted within the chief priests' group), and the riders of the 1st and 5th days all returned their robes in their entirety (note: all except the chief priests brought their own items in person). The Costume Magistrates and district officials inspected each item, received them, and placed them in storage boxes and long trunks (長櫃), which were then sealed by the Costume Magistrates and district officials and returned to Takakura storage as before. However, the large drum (大鼓) and gong drum (鉦鼓) were stored in Takakura by the district officials, and the tatami mats were likewise returned. Upon completion, all dispersed. It was noted that there is a precedent for one person or so not attending today due to illness.
