• Paper stands (紙立て): 42 [Made by wrapping straw in hanshi paper and inserting strips of ginger peel alternately. The thickness is about one hand-bundle. Specifically, each paper stand has either 5 persimmons or 5 chestnuts skewered into it, making 21 paper stands for each respectively.] • Laborers [1 woman, 1 man]: upon arrival [after breakfast], to fetch various supplies and pound the mochi. Fifty-plus hana-mochi (葩餅, petal-shaped rice cakes) were to be prepared [approximately 5 sun thin, like paper]. The remainder was to be formed into small mochi. • Designation slips (差符): 2, left and right [the written form is noted separately]. Prepared in advance by Yasunori, and brought along today. Items delivered by the sata-nin (沙汰人, administrative officers): • Flatfish (鰩): [4 pieces cut fine; this year 2 pieces cut] • Persimmons [including damaged ones]: 200 • Chestnuts: over 2 shō • Sashinuki (指貫, formal court trousers): enough for 4 page boys • Chōshi (銚子, ritual sake pourer): 1, with cover Of the above, the flatfish, persimmons, and chestnuts were sent over via carriers from the meeting house (会所), and the fishmonger brought his share directly. The sashinuki and chōshi had been requested in advance, and today a laborer was sent to collect them. After all the above supplies were readied, red bean mochi (this year in the form of zenzai, a sweet bean soup with mochi) was prepared. Four page boys who had been engaged in advance as wand-bearer attendants—Chikakazu, Toshiaki, and Naokazu and Yoshinado from the sword-belt attendants—were invited and entertained. Sake was served with them, and the side dishes consisted solely of three varieties of simmered dishes (煮染め). Afterward, the four page boys were given small portions of leftover mochi, persimmons, chestnuts, and the like. Each was also presented with one pair of sashinuki, after which they dispersed. Next, there was a discussion regarding who would be responsible for attending that evening and the following morning. For the evening, Suenori and Yasunori were to be in charge; for the following morning, Yasuteru [acting: Chōken] and Yasuyuki were to be in charge. Next, there was a discussion regarding the date for airing out (虫払い) the horse-racing (競馬) costumes and the provisions for that same day. It was settled that the date would be the 24th of this month. Furthermore, it was decided that Chōken would notify the Costume Magistrates (装束奉行) [along with directing Gorōtarō to assign four laborers, etc.]. The provisions for that day would be: 2 shō of sake and three varieties of simmered dishes, in the same manner as today. These were to be prepared at Keisen's residence. In the event of rain, the event would be postponed. With these matters concluded, everyone dispersed. This was around the Hour of the Sheep (未刻, approximately 2 p.m.). ○ Uchitori Divine Rite: Keisen attended as the chief celebrant (頭人), and the rite concluded around the Hour of the Dog (戌刻, approximately 8 p.m.). The provisions at the administrative hall this evening were served with two district officials each wearing their ceremonial white robes (浄衣). Details regarding the arrangements are recorded separately, and are therefore omitted here. 9th day (Tsuchinoe-Inu, 戊戌): Beautifully clear. The Chōyō (重陽, Double-Nine) divine rite was performed, with Keisen attending as chief celebrant. This morning, the two district officials present each wore ceremonial white robes (浄衣) and formal court trousers (指貫). When the Gon-negi (権祢宜, senior assistant priest) completed his ritual, the left-side wand holder (文挿し) was attached to a staff, and the sacred wand (幣) was extended out from the left shoulder. Likewise, when the Gon-hafuri (権祝, senior assistant ritualist) completed his ritual, the right-side wand holder was handled in the same manner, with the wand extended from the right shoulder. The proceedings concluded and everyone dispersed. This was somewhat before the Hour of the Snake (巳刻, approximately 10 a.m.). However, the matter of lending a sword from the sword-belt attendants to the Katana-ne (刀祢) today pertains to the ritual of enshrining the spirit (入魂). Furthermore, the matter of removing the sacred rope (注連縄) of the Hosodono (細殿) today was, according to recent precedent——[text continues on the next page]
