[Continued from the previous page] ……By order of the district officials (代官中), before the ritual commenced, the Katana-ne (刀祢) of the Karasu-odori (烏踊り, crow dance) was instructed to remove and set aside [the sacred rope]. Furthermore, the same person was to be put in charge from beginning to end.
24th day (Mizunoto-Ushi, 癸丑): Cloudy. Following a prior notification from the district officials, today the airing out (虫払い, literally "insect removal," i.e., airing to prevent insect damage) of all costumes for both days of the horse-racing meeting (競馬会) was carried out. [Note: Four laborers had previously been assigned to Gorōtarō for this purpose.] From after breakfast, the Costume Magistrates (装束奉行) Atsuhisa and Mitsuteru [each wearing large katabira (大帷子) and sashinuki (指貫)], and the district officials Yasuteru [acting for Chōken], Yasuyuki, Suenori [acting for Norikazu], and Yasunori, etc. [each wearing either a ceremonial white robe (浄衣) or a large katabira over an under-robe] presented themselves. Keisen, as chief celebrant (頭人), had quietly departed to Kifune Shrine and thus did not attend the district officials' gathering. One of the assembled officials went to the residence of the Shoshi-tayū (所司大夫, chief administrator) to collect the key to the administrative hall (庁屋), and removed the upper and lower lattice shutters (蔀) above the cutting board. Next, from the high storehouse (高倉), five long chests (長持), the sword boxes from below both staircases of the shrine priests' hall, the costume boxes for musicians, and the costume boxes for the Onmyōji (陰陽師, yin-yang masters) were brought out and laid open in the administrative hall. Once this was done, camphor was placed in each, and they were repacked into the boxes as before. However, since two of the long swords were found to be damaged, they were set aside to be sent for repair and were handed over to the Costume Magistrates. This morning, the following items were sent via written request (書付) from the district officials to the deliberation chamber (評議所) for laborers to collect:
• Camphor: 20 ryō • Hanshi paper: 1 fold • Tea [with pouch] • Firewood (split) • Tea kettle • Iron trivet • Wooden bucket with ladle
Furthermore, on this occasion and in accordance with established precedent, sake and food provisions, brought along by the district officials as has been customary, were prepared and dispatched from Keisen's residence. The items were as follows (based on recent precedent):
• Sake: 2 shō [in a barrel] • Simmered dishes (煮染め): 3 varieties [dried pollock (棒鱈), grilled tofu (焼き豆腐), baby taro (小芋)] placed in the third tier of a Sakai-jū (堺重, tiered Sakai lacquerware box) • Marinated vegetables (浸し物) [greens and yuzu] [placed in a small tiered box] • Cedar chopsticks: 10 sets • Drinking cups: 2 • Personal salt dishes (手塩皿): 7 • Chirori (燗徳利, sake warming vessel): 1 and other items. Around the half-hour of the Hour of the Snake (巳半刻, approximately 10:30 a.m.), laborers were sent to collect them. Note: Each person brought their own lunch (弁当) for the midday meal.
After all the costume items had been packed away, one Costume Magistrate and one district official together applied the official seal (封印) and stored the boxes in the high storehouse. Everyone then dispersed. At that time, the administrative hall was tidied up as it had been before, and the key was returned to the Shoshi-tayū.
• Also on this occasion, the two persons responsible for handing over the equipment on the first day of the Tenth Month were designated.
Tenth Month (short month, 小):
1st day (Kanoe-Saru, 庚申): Clear. The district officials were Tsunatake, Norikiyo, Kiyoo, Yasuhide, Kiyotsugu, and others. The one to fill in (充) was Tsunatake; Tsunatake was [acting for] Yukiaki——
[Marginal note at top:]
[Regarding the insect-airing (虫払い): in the event of rain, postponement is a matter of course.]
