The items for the "tōri-mono" (passing of offerings) for the Shokusen and Tone were arranged on trays. The items were as follows:
Chestnuts (five, skewered on paper stands, placed in small tiered boxes [kojūbako]) Skate/ray [ei] (one piece, placed in a small tiered box)
Cups (earthenware, one piece, for three rounds)
Persimmons (same as above) Flower petals [hanabira] (one piece, placed on a small square tray [kokaku])
The above for twenty-one shrine officials (shashi)
For the five Shōjin-gashira (leaders of abstinence/ritual purity), the flower petals are one piece each (half a piece when insufficient), chestnuts and persimmons are one piece each without paper stands, the ray is also to be cut and placed accordingly; the passing of items is the same. Those attending at their own discretion follow the same protocol as the head persons.
One entry: As attendance of the shrine officials (shashi) is voluntary, one should count the lights of the shrine officials near the Third Torii gate to confirm how many have attended, and set the number of seats accordingly.
Manner of skewering chestnuts and persimmons 【Diagram】
After the sumo wrestling concluded, the shrine officials gathered at the Tsuchiya (earthen hall), and after the Nikkū Otainaoshi-e (post-ritual banquet associated with the daily offerings) was completed, they took their seats in the Chōya (administrative hall) as customary. The Shōjin-tōnin and below did the same. At this time, the Daikan (deputy official) summoned the Tone and had sake (cold sake) poured into a chōshi (sake pitcher) and passed to the left and right. After one round of passing was completed, the two Daikan stepped up onto the kiriage (cut-board platform) and offered the greeting: "How is the sake? Please enjoy as you wish." Subsequently, two, three, or five rounds of drinks were completed, and everyone dispersed. (Note: This evening, there was no announcement by the Tone regarding chopsticks or the passing of food items.)
One entry: After the shrine officials and others had withdrawn, sake and other items were sent to the Tone, the shrine servants (jinnin), and the sumo wrestlers.
