The Ninth Day One item: The following articles to be brought in advance for the Chōyō (重陽) divine ritual are recorded below: Two swords (tachi) Two wand-staffs (nusa-gushi / heigushi) Two camp stools (shōgi) / sesame stands (gomadai), two legs Two warrant slips (sashifu) The above: After the morning meal, one is to proceed promptly to the shrine precincts (shatō) and await the completion of the divine ritual before the deity. For the purpose of the document-insertion (fumisashi) and sword-belt (tachi-obi) [ceremonies], the two Daikan (deputy officials) are to attend subsequently, and after the ritual is duly completed in the customary manner, sumo wrestling is to be held in the south garden of the Hosodono (細殿, the Slender Hall). Once completed, the warrant slips (sashifu) are to be taken back to the Daikan's residence. The young attendant (kodomo) of Kanetori and the fumisashi personnel also withdraw. The Nineteenth Day (Note: Well in advance of the appointed date, notice is to be given to the Shōzoku Bugyō (装束奉行, Costume Magistrates), and four laborers are to be assigned and directed to Gorōtarō.) One item: This concerns the airing (mushiaboshi / kazeirе) of the full set of costumes for the Ashizoroe Kurabema (足揃競馬, the preliminary horse-racing ceremony). From after the morning meal, the two Shōzoku Bugyō and five Daikan, wearing large summer robes (ōkatabira) over their ceremonial white robes (jōe) as undergarments, [proceed as follows]: one Daikan receives the Chōya (administrative hall) building, opens the latticed shutters (shitomi), and leaves them open. Then, from the Takakura (高倉, the raised storehouse), five long trunks (nagamochi) are brought out; the head priest (kannagi/kannushi) [receives them] at the foot of the western stairs, and items such as the sword box (tachi-bako), the musicians' costume box (gakujin shōzoku-bako), and the yin-yang master's costume box (onmyō shōzoku-bako) are taken out and laid open within the Chōya. When the task is complete, everything is stored away as before. Camphor (shōnō) is received from the professional staff (shoku-chū) and stored [with the items]. One Shōzoku Bugyō and one Daikan together apply the official seal (fūin). Once storage is complete, all parties withdraw from the Takakura.
