周防守殿ヨリ競馬延引仕可然由駿河介ヨリ
被仰付ニヨリ其旨状来森治部大輔へ状之趣相
談申候処ニ又周防殿御内志水小衛門ヨリ森治部大
輔へ状来文言曰加様之砌競馬延引之例候は
考可給旨被申候由ノ状也就夫例を考只今
周防守殿へ参候間其返事次第ニ競馬有無
可有之旨被申ニ付其返事待居候処ニ入夜
治部被帰候而只今迄周防守殿ニ相詰競馬延
引無之例申上候へハ殊外機嫌悪敷ニ而迷惑申候
周防殿御申候ハ兎角二条殿へ例之儀尋二条
殿次第ニ可被成候間有無之儀二条殿御返事次
弟ニ申可遣之由ニ而何トモ不知候明早天ニ周防殿へ

この年四月二十日に公方家光公が御他界された。そこで板倉周防守殿より競馬を延引するのが然るべきである旨を駿河介より申し付けられ、その旨の書状が森治部大輔へ来た。書状の趣旨を相談申し上げたところ、また周防殿の御内の志水小衛門より森治部大輔へ書状が来た。文言に曰く「このような折に競馬延引の例があるかどうか考えて給われ」という旨を申された書状である。それについて例を考え、ただ今周防守殿へ参上している間、その返事次第で競馬の有無が決まる旨を申されたので、その返事を待っていたところ、夜に入って治部が帰って来て「ただ今まで周防守殿に詰めて競馬延引の例はないと申し上げたところ、殊の外機嫌が悪くなって迷惑申した。周防殿が申されるには『とにかく二条殿へ例の儀を尋ね、二条殿次第で成すべきである。有無の儀は二条殿の御返事次第で申し遣わす』ということで、何とも分からない。明朝早天に周防殿へ

On the 20th day of the 4th month of this year, Shōgun Iemitsu passed away. Thereupon, from Itakura Suō-no-kami-dono came word through Suruga-no-suke that it would be appropriate to postpone the horse racing, and a letter to this effect came to Mori Jibu-no-taiyu. When we consulted about the content of the letter, another letter came to Mori Jibu-no-taiyu from Shimizu Koemon of Suō-dono's household. The text said, "Please consider whether there are precedents for postponing horse racing on such occasions." Regarding this, while considering precedents and currently visiting Suō-no-kami-dono, it was said that whether or not to hold the horse racing would depend on his response, so we were waiting for that response. When night fell, Jibu returned and said, "I have been with Suō-no-kami-dono until now, reporting that there are no precedents for postponing horse racing, but he became extremely displeased and I was quite troubled. Suō-dono said, 'In any case, inquire about precedents from Nijō-dono, and it should be done according to Nijō-dono's decision.
