Chōtoku-in-dono
Passed away on the 27th day of the 3rd month of Ōei 32 (1425), and the ritual offering for praying for a good harvest (kinentoku hōhei) was conducted on the 1st day of the 5th month of the same year.
Banshō-in-dono
Passed away on the 4th day of the 5th month of Tenbun 19 (1550), and the Hiyoshi Festival was held on the 20th day of the same month.
《Marginal note: Regarding the non-postponement of the two-day horse racing meet upon the death of Kubō Iemitsu-kō》【Red ink】
As written in the document sent from Nijō-dono as shown above, the two-day horse racing was executed without postponement. However, the horses of the magistrate (go-bugyō)
《Marginal note: Due to the same death, the horses were not sent out, but the guard personnel were sent out》【Red ink】
are sent out every year, but due to these circumstances, this year the horses were not sent out, though the guard personnel were sent out.
Left: Chikugo-no-kami Shigetsugu《Marginal note: Won, fell from horse into river at end of racecourse》
First race
Right: Daizen-shin Motohisa《Marginal note: Lost》
On the 5th day, due to heavy rain, the ritual offering by the left and right jockeys took place at the sacred pavilion (go-sekiya), it is said.
《Marginal note: If there is rain on the 1st day, this is an example of postponing the ritual》【Red ink】
Kiyoshige further notes that since the 1st day of the 5th month is not a formal divine service, it can be seen in medieval times that if there was rain on the 1st day, it would be conducted on the 2nd day. The Oyonaga Records state: "1st day of 5th month, Bunmei 10 (1478): Rain fell, continuous rain. Today the Kamo ritual was postponed due to rain... 2nd day: Rain fell, occasionally clear. Due to yesterday's rain, there was no Kamo foot ritual. Today it took place... 5th day: Clear and cloudy, rain occasionally fell. Horse racing as usual."
