at that place engaged in various idle talk, and furthermore when Ujiryo was departing, lay in wait at the corner of Yamamoto-
chō and repeatedly made excessive remarks. Due to this, Ujiryo had no choice but to strike with his whip,
whereupon the man instead took up a staff and confronted him, destroying his court cap and other items. Although Ujiryo had
his own thoughts on the matter, since he was dressed in the formal attire of a Shinto ritual and could not act as he wished,
nearby people came forward to separate them and sent Ujiryo away, while Rokubei was chased back to his private
residence. Rokubei's conduct of showing no regard for the sacred ceremony and, despite being a commoner, acting in such an outrageous
manner was utterly inexcusable and beyond words. Therefore, Ujiryo brought the destroyed
court cap to the horse office to lodge a complaint about these circumstances, which was deemed reasonable and became a matter for discussion by the entire shrine
community. The details are recorded below.
After Ujiryo returned home, he sent both Toraichi-dayū Yasutora and Suketarō-dayū Ujihisa as
messengers, who brought the destroyed court cap to the horse office of Head Priest Yasutaka and

the horse grounds. We have noted the circumstances you have reported, and will inform him
when he returns home. As for the court cap, it should first be taken back." Although this was conveyed twice, they
left it there and both messengers departed.
Next, he sent both Toraichi-dayū Yasutora and Sanshichi-dayū Sueka as messengers to report to
the first riders and those below the left and right steps, which was completed. There was a response confirming receipt of the message.
Later, from Kunai-shōyū Yasutaka's residence, Sakon-shōsō Yoshiaki came as
a messenger and delivered an oral statement saying: "When I received your messenger earlier, I was at the horse grounds and could not respond immediately.
However, I have now understood what was conveyed to me, and regarding the court cap
