軽服ニ而有之候哉重服ニ而も不苦候哉
右之趣御服之軽重可有之候其節之例書留
しても有之候哉紀伊守様御服者間茂無之未
地穢も可有之候潔斎被仰付候得共猶亦無
障之旨印形ニ而書付可被指出候事
亥四月廿七日
依件趣即刻一社有参会評議之上返答之
趣書付持参之也其案如左
依御尋口状
一来ル五月朔日足揃同五日競馬右御警固従
紀伊守様御組并御家来御出被成候義潔斎
被為仰付候得者不苦候由申上候定而地穢ニ被
混間敷存候而申上候得共被混地穢候者御憚可
有之義ニ奉存候
一御餝馬明廿八日より賀茂川ニ而御清シテ被為仰付
候由是も右之通被触地穢候者御憚被遊候
義ニ奉存候
此処張札ニ外ノ御屋敷ニ被成御座候御衆御出候ハヽ地
穢無之候
一土屋相模守様貞享三寅年御袋様御逝去

軽服であるか、重服でも差し支えないか
右の趣について、御服喪の軽重があるであろう、その節の例を書き留めたものもあるか。紀伊守様の御服喪は間もなく、未だ地穢れもあるであろう。潔斎を仰せ付けられても、なお又障りがない旨を印形にて書付を指し出すべきこと。
亥四月二十七日
件の趣により、即刻一社で参会し評議の上、返答の
趣を書付にして持参した。その案は左の通りである。
御尋ねにより口上書
一、来る五月朔日足揃え、同五日競馬、右御警固について
紀伊守様の御組並びに御家来が御出になる儀、潔斎を
仰せ付けられれば差し支えない由申し上げる。定めて地穢れに
触れることはないと存じて申し上げるが、もし地穢れに
触れるならば御憚りがある儀と存じ上げる。
一、御飾馬は明二十八日より賀茂川にて御清めを仰せ付け
られる由、これも右の通り地穢れに触れるならば御憚りを
なさる儀と存じ上げる。
ここに張札があり「外の御屋敷にお住まいの御衆が御出になれば地
穢れはない」
一、土屋相模守様、貞享三寅年に御袋様が御逝去

Regarding the above matter, there would be degrees of severity in formal mourning - are there any written records of precedents from such occasions? Kii-no-kami's formal mourning period is brief, and there may still be earth defilement. Even if purification is ordered, a written document with an official seal should be submitted stating that there are still no impediments.

According to the above matter, we immediately convened at the shrine for discussion and brought a written response. The draft is as follows:
Oral statement in response to inquiry
1. Regarding the horse inspection on the 1st day of the coming 5th month, the horse racing on the 5th day of the same month, and the guards for these events: we respectfully state that if purification is ordered for Kii-no-kami's organized groups and retainers who will attend, there will be no problem. We state this believing that they will certainly not come into contact with earth defilement, but if they do encounter earth defilement, we believe it would be a matter requiring respectful abstention.
1. Regarding the decorated horses that are to be purified in the Kamo River starting from the 28th day (of this month) by order: likewise, if they encounter earth defilement as mentioned above, we believe it would be a matter requiring respectful abstention.
Here there is a posted notice: "If nobles residing in other residences attend, there is no earth defilement."
