と申したところ、右の通りですから急いで退去するようにと両人は申したが、作右衛門は申すには「我等が退去すれば、いよいよ村々が勝手なことをするでしょう。その上、深江村の代官市郎右衛門や相良金左衛門と談合すべき由を申しており、退去いたしません」と言った。

島原征伐始末別記によると、十月十九日、九州肥前国高来郡島原城主松倉長門守勝家の領地口之津村にて、農民百余人が集まって宗門（キリシタン宗門）を唱えたため、代官山内小右衛門は大いに驚き、庄屋をして鎮めさせようとしたが力及ばず、相代官安井三郎左衛門と共に島原に帰り、家老方に報告した。家老共は早々に鎮めるようにと申したので、また村々へ駆け回った。

二十日乙卯
佐野弥七左衛門覚書によると、十月二十日頃、天草領内の百姓共が何事かは分からないが騒いでいる由が島原へ聞こえてきた。キリシタンが蜂起したのかと疑念を抱いた。

二十一日丙辰
松平氏覚書によると、十月二十一日より、有馬村の内浦川という所にて、内名の三吉という百姓が気違い者のようになって言うには「キリシタンの本尊サンタマリアが天下りなされる」

When they said this, both men urged him to withdraw quickly since this was the situation, but Sakuemon replied: "If we withdraw, the villages will act even more selfishly. Moreover, I have said that I should consult with Ichiroemon, the deputy of Fukae Village, and Kinzaemon Sagara, so I will not withdraw."

According to a separate record of the Shimabara suppression, on October 19th, in Kuchinotsu Village in the domain of Matsukura Nagato-no-kami Katsuie, lord of Shimabara Castle in Takaku County, Hizen Province, Kyushu, over one hundred farmers gathered and chanted the religious doctrine (Christian doctrine). Deputy Yamauchi Koemon was greatly alarmed and tried to have the village headman calm the situation, but his efforts were insufficient. Together with co-deputy Yasui Saburoemon, he returned to Shimabara and reported to the senior retainers. The senior retainers said to calm the situation quickly, so they rushed around to the villages again.

According to the memorandum of Sano Yazaemon, around October 20th, word reached Shimabara that the farmers in Amakusa territory were causing some kind of disturbance, though the nature was unclear. There were suspicions that Christians had risen up.

21st day, Hinoe-Tatsu (October 21st)
According to the memorandum of the Matsudaira clan, from October 21st, in a place called Urakawa within Arima Village, a farmer named Sankichi from Uchimyō, acting like a madman, said: "Santa Maria, the principal deity of Christianity, is descending from heaven."
