痘前（ほうさうまへ）痘後（ほうさうのち）のこゝろへの事
疱（ほう）さう前（まへ）色（いろ）〳〵のまじない有といへどもたしかならず
もしまじないを用ひば正月／喰摘（くいづみ）にかざりし野老（ところ）を
七／軒（けん）にてもとめ常（つね）の如（ごと）く煎（せん）じ小児（せうに）をあらふ事／極（きわめ）て
よし第一の用心は世間（せけん）にはやる節（せつ）は雨氣風（あまけかぜ）ふき或（あるひ）は
人込（ひとごみ）の中（なか）夜（よ）あるき遠道（とうみち）をいみこゝろへべし節（おり）〳〵

軽（かろ）く仕廻（しまは）ば其跡（そのあと）を大切（たいせつ）に養生（ようじやう）すべし第一には喰（く）ひ
ものに有むまきものを進（すゝ）むれば餘毒（よどく）を助（たすけ）て眼（め）を
損（そん）じあしき出（で）きものを發（はつ）し疳（かん）をわずらふ物也

疱瘡前・疱瘡後の心得の事
疱瘡の前には色々なまじないがあるといわれているが、確かではない。もしまじないを用いるならば、正月の食い初めに飾った野老（ところ）を七軒で求め、普通のように煎じて小児を洗うことは極めて良い。第一の用心は、世間に流行する季節には、雨気や風が吹く時、あるいは人込みの中、夜歩き、遠出を慎み、心得ておくべきである。季節の寒暑はもちろん、時気を払う薬を用いて良い。疱瘡が軽く済めば、その後を大切に養生すべきである。第一には、食べ物で油っこいものを与えれば余毒を助けて目を損ない、悪い出来物を発症し、疳の病を患うものである。

それ故に疱瘡の後では七十五日の間、油物を忌むのである。産前後と同じく、実に疱瘡は一生の大厄であるから、おろそかにすべきではない。
目を守る心得の事
疱瘡の時から目が開かなければ、乾燥期にまつ毛が閉じて開かないのは、鳥の羽根を遠くで燃やして、ふと開けさせることがある。兎の糞で洗えば不思議に目が開くことがある。様々な方法があるといわれているが、信じがたい。
鼻のふさがりの時の心得の事
小児が山上げ（発疹期）の頃から鼻息がふさがって乳を飲めない者がいる。これは前もって時々心を付け、鼻の中を

Regarding precautions before and after smallpox
It is said that there are various charms before smallpox, but they are not reliable. If one were to use charms, it would be extremely good to obtain wild yam (tokoro) that was displayed during the New Year's first feeding ceremony from seven houses, decoct it as usual, and bathe the child with it. The primary precaution is that during epidemic seasons, one should avoid rainy and windy weather, crowds, night walking, and long journeys, and keep this in mind. Naturally, one should be careful of seasonal heat and cold, and it is good to use medicines that dispel seasonal qi. If smallpox passes lightly, one should carefully recuperate afterward. Most importantly, if oily foods are given, they will aid residual toxins, damage the eyes, cause bad eruptions, and lead to malnutrition disorders.

Therefore, after smallpox, oily foods should be avoided for seventy-five days. Like before and after childbirth, smallpox is truly a major calamity of one's lifetime and should not be taken lightly.
Regarding protecting the eyes
If the eyes do not open from the time of smallpox, and during the drying period the eyelashes remain closed and will not open, burning bird feathers at a distance may suddenly cause them to open. Washing with rabbit droppings may miraculously open the eyes. Although various methods are said to exist, they are hard to believe.
