現代語訳
序
これは一条院の御代でもなく、大江山の道で酒呑童子を退治した頼光の時代でもなく、ただの八畳間の座敷での話である。今日は狂歌の会があるということで、手打ち栗のように自然に集まってきた人々がいた。
おっと心得違いをして、丹波の生け捕りの「綱」と漁の「網」の字を間違えて、羅生門かと思ったが、思いがけず道を間違えた坂田金平が、いつものように酔った心地で牛車を押してやってきた。
天神下から、いつものように一眠りしてから言葉遊びの花を咲かせ、江戸川から波乗り舟を漕ぎ出して向こう岸へと心を向ける。頼光の四天王と和歌の三神を混ぜ合わせた綱引きにかけた七福神、十の采振りの目覚ましい子供遊びの餓鬼大将となったのである。
まさに見た初夢は
一富士、二鷹、三茄子
夢を取り違えて
獏に食わせるな
金欠武士

Preface
This is not the reign of Emperor Ichijō, nor the time of Minamoto no Raikō who defeated the demon Shuten-dōji on Mount Ōeyama, but rather a tale set in an ordinary eight-tatami room. Today there was to be a kyōka (comic verse) gathering, and people naturally assembled like hand-cracked chestnuts.
Oh, what a misunderstanding! Confusing the character for "rope" (tsuna) used in capturing alive in Tamba with the "net" (ami) used for fishing, I thought this might be Rashōmon gate, but unexpectedly having taken the wrong path, Sakata Kinpira arrived in his usual drunken state, pushing an ox-cart.
From Tenjin-shita, after the usual nap, he would make words bloom like flowers, rowing a wave-riding boat from the Edo River toward the opposite shore. Mixing Raikō's Four Heavenly Kings with the three gods of waka poetry in a tug-of-war rope, he became the leader of the Seven Lucky Gods and the remarkable dice-throwing children's games - a veritable king of street urchins.
Indeed, the first dream I saw was:
First Fuji, second hawk, third eggplant
Don't confuse your dreams
And let the baku devour them
