身不肖の私ではございますが、木元橘の指図により木頭の役を務め、狂言はもちろん一体仲間の取り談合、何事によらず取り計らいをする義にて、木元の代わりも務めて立てられる身を妬まれ、誠に老いぬれば麒麟も駑馬に劣ると金言空しからず。若木の折りは日の出と称され、おのおの方にもご贔屓厚く、朝顔に魁けして東雲に花を生じ、皮は諸国の重宝もの、色紙短冊文通書籍第一、初春初日の出先一番に末広がり扇々の目出度さを織りなす地紙の徳を上げ、貴賎片時も捨てざる身、我に勝るものあらじと世上の寵愛限りなく、徳には慣れ共、損のない楮が株を枯らさんと
英語訳
Though I am an unworthy person, by the direction of the tree leader Tachibana, I serve in the role of tree head, handling not only kyōgen performances but also consultations among the entire troupe, taking care of all matters and even serving as a substitute for the tree leader - for this I am envied. Truly, as the golden saying goes, when one grows old even a qilin becomes inferior to a nag. In my youth I was called "sunrise," receiving warm patronage from each of you. Preceding the morning glory, I bloom at dawn, and my bark is a treasure of all provinces - the finest for colored paper, poem cards, correspondence, and books. On New Year's Day at the first sunrise, I contribute to the auspicious spreading of fans, raising up the virtue of the base paper. I am one whom nobles and commoners alike never discard for even a moment. Thinking there is none superior to me, receiving boundless favor from the world, though accustomed to virtue, [someone seeks] to wither the stock of this blameless paper mulberry.
