Having received payments by order from a certain Tachibana of the local vegetation of this mountain, I have been serving while adorning myself with the finery of leaves, flowers, and fruits. Yet the fern at the base of the leaves nods in agreement, giving payments to the other plants and trees, while to me, this paper mulberry, from the very beginning of the auspicious budding season, the payment is a meager amount of money - just two ryō for flowers, insufficient for rain or dew. Even if I were to take no payment, as a paper mulberry favored by Tachibana, I devoted myself wholeheartedly wishing only for prosperity, but to no avail - being scolded in the shade of the dogwood tree, how can the dignity of the mountain be maintained?
