なんぼう当世（とうせい）きゝもの【利者＝権勢のある人】でもこなたひと木（き）であた

来（く）る事 人参（にんじん）は能（のう）ある身（み）なれど一分（いちぶん）計（はかり）ではね
はとられぬ余（よ）の薬種衆（やくしゆしゆ）にくわゝつてあたると
おもへばめい〳〵のつゝしみになる心付￣ケ じや
さればたとへにいふとをり樹（き）高（たか）ければ風の為（ため）に
破（やぶ）られ人（ひと）賢（けん）なれば侫（ねい）の為に破らるゝとて
第一（だいいち）の慎（つゝしみ）所（ところ）銀杏（いてう）丈（じやう）も桑（くわ）丈も木綿（もめん）どのも
年（とし）々に枝（ゑだ）ぶりの広（ひろ）がるまゝ人もなげなるふる
まいおゝし一寸（いっすん）の草（くさ）に五分（ごぶ）のたましい若木（わかき）を
もちいててうあいする所（ところ）と古木（こぼく）を称美（せうび）する
所とにふたつありて古（ふる）木とて片付（かたつけ）がたしすねる
ほど可愛（かあい）がらるゝ庭（には）の松（まつ）といふ事もあれば
美（び）なる計が自慢（じまん）にもあらず強（つよ）き計がみそにも
現代語訳
なんぼう当世の権勢者でも、こなた一本の木で当たるのではない。相手それぞれの持ち合いで、おのずから落ちが来ることだ。人参は能力ある身だけれど、一分ばかりでは値は取られぬ。他の薬種衆に加わって当たると思えば、めいめいの慎みになる心づけじゃ。
さればたとえに言う通り、樹高ければ風のために破られ、人賢なれば讒言のために破られるといって、第一の慎み所だ。銀杏丈も桑丈も木綿殿も、年々に枝ぶりの広がるまま、人をも軽んずるような振る舞いが多い。一寸の草に五分の魂で、若木を用いて重用する所と、古木を称美する所との二つがあって、古木といって片づけ難い。拗ねるほど可愛がられる庭の松ということもあれば、美しいばかりが自慢にもならず、強いばかりが味噌にもならない。

No matter how much one may be a powerful person of the current age, you cannot succeed with just one tree alone. Through what each opponent brings to bear, naturally consequences will come. Ginseng may be a capable being, but with just one part alone, no price can be commanded. If you think to join with other medicinal herb merchants and compete together, it becomes a reminder for each to exercise restraint.
Therefore, as the saying goes, when a tree is tall it is broken by the wind, and when a person is wise they are destroyed by slander - this is the primary place for caution. Lord Ginkgo, Lord Mulberry, and Lord Cotton too - as their branches spread wider year by year, they often behave as if looking down on people. With the spirit of five parts in a one-inch plant, there are two approaches: places that employ and favor young trees, and places that praise ancient trees. Ancient trees cannot simply be dismissed. Just as there are garden pines that are loved more the more they sulk, beauty alone is not something to boast about, nor is strength alone the key to success.
