山 科（しな）やとはきついあたり《割書：コレ｜》こちらな桑（くわ）の木（き）どの
かわいらしい木（き）ぶりをしてひとつになつていらぬ枝（ゑだ）
たておれが枯（かれ）たらこまろふなどゝ人もなげなる
ふるまい《割書：イヤ｜》もふきつい鼻高（ぐひん）達（たち）で誠（まこと）の天狗（てんぐ）は
はだしで飛（とぶ）ぞやよふ〳〵此頃 若芽（わかめ）をふきだしをふ
大木（たいぼく）の生（はへ）ぎわとはふといの根じやと草双紙（くさそうし）の株（かぶ）に
あるぞやましてや女木（めぎ）はつみ深（ふか）くいふは古（ふる）いが外面（げめん）
如菩薩（にょぼさつ）内心（ないしん）は道成寺（とうしやうじ）の鐘（かね）の内にておそろしい
心入じやその木質（きしつ）を直（なを）さぬと木仲ヶ間をはづ
されて鬼百合（おにゆり）ともならるべし上をみれば青空（あをぞら）
じや下をみれば掘抜（ほりぬき）じやこなたひとりがひいきかへ
外にはないとおもふがこけじや上 手（づ）にならばなをひげ
して下からでるが上手といふもの枯てゆかれし
王子の神木（しんぼく）へどろをぬらぬよふにおしやれ《割書：ヲヽ｜》
現代語訳
山科やとはきついあたり（これ）。こちらな桑の木殿、かわいらしい木ぶりをして一つになって、いらぬ枝立て、俺が枯れたら困ろうなどと人もなげな振る舞い（いや）。もうきつい鼻高（傲慢）達で、誠の天狗は裸足で飛ぶぞや。ようやく此頃若芽を吹き出し、おお大木の生え際とは太いの根じゃと草双紙の株にあるぞや。まして女木は罪深く、言うは古いが外面如菩薩、内心は道成寺の鐘の内にて恐ろしい心入れじゃ。その木質を直さぬと木仲ヶ間を外されて鬼百合ともなるべし。上を見れば青空じゃ、下を見れば掘抜きじゃ。こなた一人がひいきかえ、外にはないと思うがこけじゃ。上手になればなお髭して、下から出るが上手というもの。枯れて行かれし王子の神木へどろを塗らぬようにおしゃれ（おお）。
英語訳
Yamashina is quite a tough area (indeed). You there, Lord Mulberry tree, with your lovely tree form, becoming one, putting up unnecessary branches, saying things like "people will be troubled when I wither" - such aloof behavior (oh my). These are already quite arrogant and proud ones - true tengu fly barefoot. Finally, recently sprouting young buds, oh what thick roots the base of this great tree has, as written in the kusazōshi stories. Moreover, female trees are deeply sinful - though it's an old saying, they appear like bodhisattvas on the outside, but inside their hearts are as frightful as within the bell of Dōjōji temple. If you don't correct that wood nature, you'll be excluded from the tree community and might even become a demon lily. Look up and there's blue sky, look down and there are wells. Thinking that you alone receive special favor and there's nothing else is foolish. To become skillful, grow whiskers and emerge from below - that's what skill means. Be stylish so as not to smear mud on the sacred tree of Ōji that has withered away (oh).
