「お前にもこの晒しの手拭いを、轡の紋付きのを（やろう）。何より重宝だ。日本橋でも知られた人なのに、まだ化け物に大谷（の芝居）とは、辻占のようなものだ。葭簀の（陰の）水茶屋で、また会うまでの暇乞いだ」
とでたらめを言う十六兵衛の高慢な話。
「するのも公時の気取りなのだろう」と茶屋の亭主が釜の下に薪をくべながら、「ずいぶん古いがお茶でも上がれ」
