かうぞは心よしの生（せう）とく花は人の心をなぐさめ
根は色子（いろこ）の重宝（ちやうほう）とせられ皮（かわ）はさきほどの給ふ
ごとく片時（へんし）もなくてかなわざる紙（かみ）のとくあん
どうに夜なべのあかりをよくするといへどもある
針（はり）さしはあそばせてづぶり〳〵とつらぬかれまた
色里（いろざと）のうきくろうはかうぞどのゝ夢（ゆめ）にもしられ
ぬよそのくぜつをもつて来（き）てじれつたいとて
かんざしでつきぬかれ是（これ）計（ばかり）にあらずさま〳〵のかん
なんくらふそれをも苦（く）にせぬ心からよつほどの
上人（しやうにん）上 木（ほく）こよいのよふにはら立（たゝ）るゝはたいていの
事ではなしとかく諸事（しよじ）のいさ葉（は）こざ葉なに
から生（は）へるとおもふてみるにそれに付￣ケても
葉根（はね）のほしさよ理屈（りくつ）も道理（どうり）もさしおゐて
かうぞ殿をたてさへすりやおのづから銀杏（いてう）どのも

楮は心よしの生得、花は人の心を慰め、根は色子の重宝とされ、皮は先ほど申し上げる通り片時もなくてはかなわざる紙の特長。行灯に夜なべの明かりをよくするといえども、ある針刺しは遊ばせて、つぶりつぶりと貫かれ、また色里の憂き苦労は楮殿の夢にも知られぬよその苦節をもって来て、じれったいとて簪で突き貫かれ、こればかりにあらず様々の艱難を食らう。それをも苦にせぬ心から、よっぽどの上人、上木。今宜のように腹立たるるは大抵の事ではなし。とかく諸事のいざこざ何から生えるとおもってみるに、それについても葉根の欲しさよ。理屈も道理も差し置いて、楮殿を立てさえすりゃ自ずから銀杏殿も

The paper mulberry (kōzo) has an inherently good nature: its flowers comfort people's hearts, its roots serve as treasures for courtesans, and its bark, as mentioned earlier, has the essential quality of paper that cannot be done without even for a moment. Although it provides good light for night work in paper lanterns, when used as a needle cushion, it gets repeatedly pierced through and through. Moreover, the sorrows and hardships of the pleasure quarters bring troubles unknown even in the paper mulberry lord's dreams, and when frustrated, it gets stabbed through with hairpins. Not only this, but it endures various other hardships. Having a heart that doesn't consider these as suffering, it is quite the saint, the superior tree. Getting angry as tonight is no ordinary matter. When one thinks about what all these various disputes arise from, even in this regard, oh how one desires leaves and roots!
