評判（ひやうばん）よくねがわずとても木頭（きかしら）ものじやむかし
からのことの葉（は）にも君と我とは朽木（くちき）の伽羅（きやら）よ
中のよいのは人しらずとうたへども中のわるいは
はめをはづしておもてむきからみへすゝきのどく【みへすくきのどく（見へ透く気の毒）？】
元禄十七《割書：甲｜ 申》年二月の中の九日に浮世（うきよ）の隙（ひま）
をあけられし門誉入室覚栄（もんよにうしつかくゑい）は植物（うへもの）ずき
であつたから此 芝居（しばゐ）をみせたならさぞやさぞ
口おしがりて草（くさ）のかげからなげかるゝであらふ
といふも箱根（はこね）の変木（へんき）を頭痛（づつう）なれども草木（そうもく）
国土（こくど）しつかいじやうぶつときくなればきのどくさ
にあほうがさしでて大帳（だいちやう）へはんぜうをぶちこんだも
扇（あふぎ）にお瀬話（せわ）といふものならんかと谷水（たにみづ）にのどを
うるほし腹（はら）いつぱいをいゝければ橘（たちはな）の精（せい）にとく
とゑみをふくみたん〳〵のこじつけまて木元（きもと）は
現代語訳
評判よく、願わずとも木頭者じゃ。昔からの言葉にも「君と我とは朽木の伽羅よ、仲のよいのは人知らず」と歌えども、仲の悪いのは羽目を外して表向きから見え透く気の毒。
元禄十七年（甲申）二月の中の九日に浮世の暇を明けられし門誉入室覚栄は植物好きであったから、この芝居を見せたならさぞかしさぞ
口惜しがって草の陰から嘆かれるであろう。
というのも箱根の変木を頭痛なれども、草木国土悉皆成仏と聞くなれば気の毒さに阿呆が差し出て大帳へ判銭を打ち込んだのも、扇にお世話というものならんかと谷水に喉を潤し腹いっぱいを言えば、橘の精にとくとえみを含み、たんたんのこじつけまで木元は

With good reputation, even without wishing for it, they are the leaders among trees. Though ancient words sing "You and I are like fragrant aloe in decaying wood, our good relationship unknown to others," when relationships turn sour, they lose restraint and their pitiable state becomes visible from the surface.
Mon'yo Nyūshitsu Kakuei, who departed this floating world on the ninth day of the middle of the second month of Genroku 17 (Year of the Wood Monkey), was fond of plants, so if he had been shown this theater performance, surely, surely
he would have lamented regretfully from the shadows of the grass.
Speaking of which, though the strange trees of Hakone cause headaches, since we hear that "all plants and lands can attain Buddhahood," out of pity a fool stepped forward and threw gambling money into the ledger. Wondering if this might be what they call "trouble with a fan," moistening the throat with valley water and speaking one's fill, the spirit of the tachibana orange holds a knowing smile, and even the far-fetched reasoning, the tree foundation...
