木綿（もめん）はもとの十 文字（もんじ）こいつもしれたが桑（くわ）の精

現代語訳
息を休めたり。「あれあれ、今の教えのごとく、あれも仲良くして木元のためになり給え」というのかと思えば、吹き来る野風。「いうのかと思えば吹き来る野風あり」つる草木はばらばらと元の木立となりければ、十六兵衛はさっぱりと今こそ夢の覚め。
「はあ、変わった夢を見た。銀杏の精は聞こえたが、木綿は元の十文字、こいつも知れたが、桑の精とかうぞがわからぬ」
「むむ、桑は蚕という虫の餌食、その葉を食うて綿を吐く。その綿を買うして、そして結綿という心。そこで楮はちと難しい、その皮を紙に漉いて扇の地紙。むむ、読めたこう。せずとも、やっぱり柏の精と出りゃ手短で読みやすいに。地紙とは回りどおりな化けようをしたものじゃが、しかしここが狂言じゃ。桑と楮がわからぬも見物に考え
