現代語訳
ようとしたけれども、その妻はたとえ死んでも夫の言うことを聞き入れないと、父母の諫言も聞き入れず、ますます号泣して止まなかった。子供たちは母の心が解けないのを見て悲しみに堪えず、母を諫め父に訴えて、みんな一緒に泣いたので、富農も為すべき手段を失い、手をこまねいて一人門のそばに立ち、「私の妻はあのように頑固で、すでに身をもって神明に誓ってしまった。私は実に彼女を殺すに忍びない。牛とロバの談話の顛末を告げ知らせ、私自身が死ぬべきであろう。最愛の妻を殺すよりも、むしろ心安いであろう」などと種々に思案を凝らしていた折しも、前面の畑に雄鶏が遊んでいた。

However, his wife declared that even if she died, she would not heed her husband's words. She would not listen to her parents' admonishments either, and wept all the more bitterly without stopping. The children, seeing that their mother's heart could not be softened, could not bear their grief. They remonstrated with their mother and appealed to their father, all weeping together. The wealthy farmer also lost all means of what to do, and standing alone by the gate with folded arms, thought: "My wife is so stubborn, and has already sworn by her very life to the gods. I truly cannot bear to kill her. I should tell her the outcome of the ox and donkey's conversation, and I myself should die instead. That would surely be more peaceful than killing my most beloved wife." As he was pondering these various thoughts, a rooster happened to be playing in the field in front of him.
