出て行ったので、残るのは帝と姫だけとなった。その時、帝が姫の顔を覆う布を脱がせたところ、まずその美しさに驚き、また涙の跡があるのを見て「あなたは既に自ら進んで私に嫁いだのに、なぜそれほどまでに心を痛めているのか」と不思議に思って問われた。するとシェヘラザード姫は「私が悲しんでいることは、自分自身のことを悲しんでいるのではありません。私には一人の妹がおり、私は大変彼女を愛していますが、もはや二度と彼女を見ることができなくなることを思って悲しみを起こしているのです。どうか大きな慈悲をお垂れになり、今夜一夜のことですから、特別に同じ部屋で寝かせていただき、最後の対面をお許しくださいませんか」と悲しみながら願った。
