Eight months passed, but he was unable to discover any news of his son's safety.
Just then, as the festival of Great Bairam was approaching, he commanded his steward to follow the law by slaughtering a cow—giving half to the poor and preparing half for a feast. He had the fattest female cow from his pasture brought forth to be slaughtered. But when the cow pitifully knelt down, raised her head, and shed tears as if begging for mercy, the old man was suddenly moved with great compassion and could not bear to bring down the knife. He ordered that another cow be brought instead.
His wife, who was standing nearby, appeared quite displeased and spoke skillfully, arguing against the old man's adherence to such useless petty kindness, and urged that this cow be slaughtered
