ことを苦しく勧めて、終にはその言葉を用いないとて怨恨の様子があったので、一匹の雌牛を憐れむために夫婦が不仲になってしまっては本意ではないと、その雌牛を屠るべきに決したけれども、なお自分では手を下すに忍びず、家宰にこれを屠らせてその皮を剥がしたところ、不思議なことに、あれほど肥満と見えた雌牛は肉というものが甚だわずかで、ただ骨ばかりがごろごろと転がり出た。老人はたちまち怒りを生じ、言葉荒らかに「このような者が何の用に当たるに足りようか。速やかに肥えた子牛を牽いて来い」と命じたので、家宰は恐れかしこまって、時を移さず一

She persistently urged him to do so, and finally showed signs of resentment when he would not heed her words. Thinking that it would not be his true intention to have husband and wife quarrel over pitying a single cow, he decided that the cow should be slaughtered. However, still unable to bear doing it with his own hands, he had his steward slaughter it and skin it. How strange it was! The cow that had appeared so fat had very little meat, and only bones came tumbling out. The old man immediately flew into a rage and said harshly, "What use could such a thing serve?
