吉利子樹（ウグイスノキ）は臘月（十二月）より諸木に先立って芽を生ず。
立春に花を開く。三月に実熟す。『本草』に按ずるに桃は三月の
未熟と云い、『蜀都賦』に「朱春熟」と云えども四月に
熟す。吉利子は三月初より熟す。木の果で三月に実の
るのは百果の魁である。鴬が始めて啼く時にこの花も咲く
故に名付けたのかと貝原翁が云われた。

The Kirishi tree (Uguisu-no-ki) produces buds ahead of all other trees from the 12th month.
It blooms at the beginning of spring. The fruit ripens in the third month. According to the Bencao, peach
is unripe in the third month, and although the Shu Du Fu says "red spring ripening," it
ripens in the fourth month. Kirishi ripens from early third month. Among tree fruits that bear
fruit in the third month, it is the leader of all fruits. When nightingales first sing, this flower also blooms,
so it was perhaps named for this reason, as the venerable Kaibara said.

The Bencao considers small-leaved catalpa to be enoki.
Upon current investigation, the enoki tree is not a type of catalpa.
If so, then calling enoki "E" in our country
is probably an error. Both the Man'yōshū and Jun
Wamyōshō read the character 榎 as "E." The source
is unclear ○ There are two types of enoki trees. One type is called muku-enoki.
It is used for military shield boards in battle formations. It serves as equipment to defend against firearms and arrows.
It is said that enoki is used to make horse saddles.
