現代語訳

『増補多識編』灌木類に曰く、

　　　　　　　バキ」
　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　【印】花木

『和漢三才図会』灌木類に曰く、
　　　海石榴（ツバキ）
　　　　　椿は倭字（日本独自の字）
　　　　　椿はもともと喬木（高木）の類であり、
　　　　　樗椿のことであって、海石榴とは
　　　　　全く異なる。

　　　『万葉集』・『本朝式』・『倭名抄』はいずれも
　　　「椿」と「海石榴」の字を用いて「ツバキ」と訓じている。
　　　その来歴は古い。

　　一重咲きの赤いものを「山椿」と名付ける。これこそが
　　椿の本源（原種）である。

英語訳

The Zōho Tashiki-hen (Expanded Multi-Knowledge Compilation), in the section on shrubs, states:
　　　　　　　Sanchya (Mountain tea/Camellia)　Japanese name: Upon reflection, "Tsubaki"
　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　【Seal】Flowering trees

The Wakan Sansai Zue (Illustrated Sino-Japanese Encyclopedia), in the section on shrubs, states:
　　　Sea pomegranate (Tsubaki / Camellia)
　　　　　"Tsubaki" (椿) is a Japanese-coined character (waji)
　　　　　The character 椿 originally belongs to the category of tall trees,
　　　　　referring to the tree of heaven (chun/chokkan),
　　　　　and is entirely different from the sea pomegranate (camellia).

　　　The Man'yōshū, Honchōshiki, and Wamyōshō all
　　　use the characters 椿 and 海石榴 and read them as "Tsubaki."
　　　Its history goes back a long way.

　　The single-petaled red variety is called "Mountain Camellia" (Yama-tsubaki). This is indeed
　　the original source (wild species) of the camellia.
