たわみて往来御用心と張札所々に見（み）ゆれ

そのような土蔵の土のずり落ちは数多くあり、家が傾いて往来で「御用心」と張り札が所々に見える。十四日は夜半頃大分強く、七つ時にまたごろごろと鳴動する。この日は二季の極（集金の時期）であるのに、その掛け取りの者がいつもよりも物寂しいのはどういうことか。十五日になって少し雨が降り出し、その中でもまたごろごろと時々鳴り止まず、もはや地震に慣れて他人事のようにも思えるが、心は決してそうではなく祈ったことであろう。十六日も引き続き雨が降れば、過ぎたこの大変事により屋根瓦がずり落ち、大工・瓦師・左官・手伝い等も、なにしろ数か所の修繕のため手が回りかね、所々で雨漏りして難儀な様子が多く見える。また土蔵の傍に建つ家は、土がずり落ちることを恐れて心配しすぎて、夜な夜な他所へ泊まりに行く人も多くあるとのこと。十七日、いまだ雨強く降り、八つ時に少々晴れ間があって、日暮れ過ぎ西に稲光が少々見えた。

Such sliding down of earth from storehouses was numerous, and houses leaned with warning signs posted saying "Take care" visible here and there on the streets. On the fourteenth day, around midnight it was quite strong, and at the seventh hour there was again rumbling and tremors. This day was the peak of the seasonal collection period, yet the debt collectors seemed more melancholy than usual - what could this mean? On the fifteenth day, a little rain began to fall, and even amidst this there was again rumbling that continued intermittently without cease. People had already grown accustomed to the earthquakes and might treat them as someone else's affair, but their hearts were certainly not so, and they must have prayed. On the sixteenth day the rain continued, and from this great disaster roof tiles had slid off. Carpenters, tile masters, plasterers, assistants and others - with so many places needing repair, they could not manage to get around to everything, and rain was leaking in many places, creating much hardship. Also, houses built beside storehouses feared the earth sliding down and worried excessively, with many people going to stay elsewhere night after night. On the seventeenth day, the rain was still falling heavily, there was a brief clearing at the eighth hour, and after sunset there was a little lightning in the west.
