さて物忌みが済んだので、大臣、公卿、殿上人が参上なさった。中でも中将殿は東宮におられるので、琴の演奏をされた。公卿上達部が様々な話題について語り合っていたので、姫君はこれを御覧になって、思い出したような様子もなく、ほころび戯れていらっしゃったので、（中将の）恨めしさは限りなく、ますます慎ましくて、忍ぶ涙を抑えることができず、忘れることはないけれども、几帳の辺りに消え入るような心地がなさった。さて物忌みが終わったので、公卿殿上人を饗応として、それぞれの局の番に留まらせなさる。東宮の中将は

As the light of the dawn moon tilted toward the mountain ridge and white snow fell throughout the night, growing ever more brilliant as the night deepened, with a pure heart finding it beautiful, the Middle Captain drew his horizontal flute from his waist, tuned it in the banshiki mode, and performed a chanted recitation. "When the bright moon enters the gardens of Ryōō, snow fills the mountain ranges. When one ascends riding the evening's pleasure, the moon shines clearly for a thousand ri."
