り参り御せじ参せけれは中将殿御手にたに

心はこちらにばかりあって、「夜が明けてほしい」と急いでいたところ、今夜は特に時間がかかってしまい、鶏が鳴く声を合図にして帰ってきたのです」と言って、いつものお寝室にお入りになって語り合いながらお休みになった。枕を並べたその辺りでは、お互いの涙がひどく多かった。また大臣殿より「いらっしゃってください」とのお使いがあったので、心ならずもお別れして参上なさる。母君は硯と紙を取って、「どうして後朝の文が遅くなっているのですか」とおっしゃったので、中将殿は心ならずも筆に任せて書き流しなさった。
「ああ、早まって何の理由もなく物思いをさせてしまった報いとして、今はもう尋ねまいと思う」

と書いてそのまま置かれたので、乳母が取って結び文にして、六位の臣に持たせた。六位の臣は大将のもとへ持って参った。中将殿はすぐにご自分のお部屋へ帰ってふさぎ込んでいらっしゃった。そのうちに六位の臣は大将殿のところでさまざまにもてなされ、いろいろな引き出物をいただいて帰って参り、返事をお渡し申し上げた。中将殿は手に取ろうともなさらず、母君がご覧になったところ、筆跡も普通ではなかった。
「尋ねないとしても言うことの葉があるのは当然でしょう。夜更けに帰るのが習慣になっているのだから」
さて中将殿は明けるまで一睡もなさらず、ふさぎ込んでいらっしゃった。

So saying, he entered his usual bedchamber and lay down together with her, speaking intimately. Around where they placed their pillows side by side, there were countless tears from both of them. Again there came a messenger from the Minister saying "Please come," so reluctantly parting, he went to pay his respects. His mother took an inkstone and paper, saying "Why is your morning-after letter delayed?" So the Middle Captain, against his wishes, let his brush flow freely and wrote:
"Ah, as retribution for having caused you to worry without reason in my haste, now I think I shall not inquire after you."

Having written this, he simply set it aside, so the wet nurse took it, folded it into a letter, and had the sixth-rank courtier carry it. The sixth-rank courtier took it to the General's residence. The Middle Captain immediately returned to his own quarters and fell into dejection. Meanwhile, the sixth-rank courtier was entertained in various ways at the General's residence, received various parting gifts, and returned to present the reply. The Middle Captain would not even take it in his hands, so his mother read it, and even the handwriting was extraordinary.
"Even if you say you won't inquire, it's natural that there should be words to speak, since returning late at night has become your habit."
And so the Middle Captain did not sleep a wink until dawn, remaining in dejection.
