ふさぎ込んでいらっしゃったが、また使者が頻繁に来るので、仕方なく別れて直衣をお召しになる。車寄せまで侍従や音頭を呼んで、すぐに帰るつもりで「帰るまでの間、二人とも妻のそばにいて慰めてくれ。どのように親が仰せになろうとも、三夜までは行くべきだ。その後は叶わない」と。なおもあれこれと仰せられると「どのような深い山に籠もって姿を変え出家をしようとも、決して行くことはない。今夜、明日の夜ばかりは心穏やかでなく待っているだろう」と仰せられて、泣きながら
お車にお乗りになって出発なさった。

He called attendants and servants to the carriage entrance, intending to return immediately, saying "Until I return, both of you stay by my wife's side and comfort her. No matter what my parent may command, I should go for three nights. After that, it will not be possible." When he continued to speak of various things, he said "No matter how deep in the mountains I might seclude myself, changing my form and becoming a monk, I will absolutely never go. Tonight and tomorrow night only, I will wait without peace of mind," and weeping,
he boarded his carriage and departed.
