また種痘の期間中は涼しく保つべきことは後の章にも見えるとおりであるが、これも聞き入れず、温め過ぎて害を起こすことがある。すべて種痘のことは何事も、種痘に熟練した医師に委任して、その教えに従うべきである。そうでなければ完全な成功は保証しがたい。

With natural smallpox, even if the symptoms are mild, parents worry greatly, requesting daily medical examinations, nursing day and night without neglect, and even making pilgrimages to temples and shrines without minding long journeys. Yet with variolation, they take it lightly, paying no attention and making no effort. They especially dislike going to other houses to obtain vaccine material, and moreover, saying the physician's house is far away, they refuse to take the child there. They also pity the child's crying and neglect the variolation, or fail to have the authenticity of real versus fake vaccine verified. Some even sleep too soundly at night and remain unaware that their child is scratching and tearing open the pustules due to itching.
