ありて種（たね）にならぬもあればとりて人々に伝ふる程の
良漿（よきうみ）ならばその父母 喜（よろこ）び勇（いさ）むべき事なるに中（なか）に
は可愛（かあい）子の漿（うみ）を破（やぶ）り採（とる）ことは医にもさせぬなど
理不尽（りふじん）に言（いひ）て種（たね）の絶（たえ）るを気毒（きのどく）にも思はぬ人あり
是は人情（にんじよう）も恩義（をんぎ）もしらぬ人なり其上是を採（とり）て

（前ページからの続き）毒があって種痘の材料にならないものもあるが、採取して人々に伝えるほどの良質な膿であれば、その父母は喜び勇むべきことであるのに、中には可愛い子の膿を破って採ることは医師にもさせないなどと理不尽なことを言って、種痘材料が絶えることを気の毒にも思わない人がいる。これは人情も恩義も知らない人である。その上、これを採取して役に立たないのであれば、高貴な方はなおさら家臣たちに下賜されないはずであり、医師もまた行わないはずである。これらのことをよく考えてみるべきである。

　　天然痘との併発は必ずしも恐れることではない

天然痘が流行する時に種痘を行うと天然痘と同時に併発することがあるので、流行する前に種痘を済ませておけば安心この上ない。しかし、流行時に種痘を行うと

天然痘を呼び出して併発し、治療が困難になると言って、それを恐れて種痘をしない人もまた多いけれども、そのような理由はないものである。種痘をしてから十五、六日を過ぎれば、再び天然痘を患うことは決してないことであるが、十五、六日の間には稀に天然痘が来ることは種痘をしない前も同じことで、それは生来持っている痘瘡なので良いものも悪いものもあるであろう。併発すると特に困難になるということはない。種痘の書物には併発すると多くは軽症であるとさえ書かれている。したがって流行時だといって種痘を恐れて行わないのは、天然痘が来るのを待ち受けるものであって、危険を求める道だと知るべきである。

Yet some people unreasonably refuse to let even physicians break open and collect their beloved child's pustules, showing no concern that the vaccine material might run out. Such people know neither human compassion nor gratitude. Moreover, if collecting this material were not beneficial, noble lords would certainly not distribute it to their retainers, nor would physicians practice it. One should carefully consider these points.

　　Concurrent infection is not necessarily to be feared

When variolation is performed during a smallpox epidemic, it may occur simultaneously with natural smallpox, so it would be most reassuring to complete the variolation before an epidemic begins. However, if variolation is performed during an epidemic,

some say it will summon natural smallpox and cause concurrent infection, making treatment difficult, and many people fear this and refuse variolation. But there is no basis for such reasoning. After fifteen or sixteen days from variolation, one will never again suffer from natural smallpox, but during those fifteen or sixteen days, natural smallpox may rarely occur—this is the same whether or not one has been variolated beforehand. Since this is the inherent smallpox one carries, it may be either mild or severe. There is nothing to suggest that concurrent infection makes treatment particularly difficult. Variolation texts even state that when concurrent infection occurs, it is usually mild. Therefore, one should know that refusing variolation out of fear during an epidemic is tantamount to waiting for natural smallpox to come—a path that seeks out danger.
